I just read an article about the upcoming sooner than normal spring. Apparently, this will be conducive to insects. Expect a buggy year up in temagami.... So what sort of bug repellent is the best? I need to stock up... I've had good luck with 3M products? Any insight.

DEET is the only thing that has ever worked for me. Tight cuffs helps. I hate bug hats. |

Tell everyone else in your party to have a bath with a nice fragrant soap prior to the trip! |

Did Health Canada ban it? I seem to only find low % DEET sprays.. I read you want 100% DEET? |

Yah.. they did, but you can still get 99.9% deet in the USA (and a few lodges that have had customers bring it up for them). I have some in camp.. I also know Lakair Lodge on hwy 64 (where it crosses the west arm of Nipissing) has/had some on the shelf as well. |

There was a product I bought about 10 years ago at Sundridge Bait and Tackle right on Hwy 11. I was really happy with the product and ended up buying a bunch more on line. Not sure where you can get it now, maybe somewhere up north you can find it. It's called Repel-a-Fly by Mcurdys (not sure of the spelling). You can get a "special recipe" with deet as well. Buy a bunch if you can find, citeronella based. I just rubbed on my neck, hands and ears and I was good to go. |

"repalfly", i remember that stuff! i also remember hearing that citronella based dope works for some people but not for others based on individual skin chemistry (it doesn't work for me) the only thing that does is 100% DEET which i only use in emergencies ever since i sprayed some on my face and it destroyed the plastic lenses of my glasses... |

100% DEET indeed is potent stuff. I've seen it eat fishing line and erode the paint off of fishing lures and eat through tent floors in addition to keeping bugs away quite effectively. I've heard that there is a natural substance - maybe plant-based - called picardin that is more user friendly than DEET, but I'm not sure how effective it is. Anyone have any experience with it? |

Back in the late 60's a guy in NY was making "Ol' Woodsman" in tubs in his basement. Several co-campers brought some along & that stuff beat the Temagami skeeters back better than anything else in camp. |

John: I don't think I have used it on myself. I think it is in the product Avon sells. I bought some in the grocery store in Armstrong several years ago. A long story, but we asked the clerk if they had any and she said no, but if we waited for 5 minutes she would call the local Avon Lady , who showed up 5 minutes later. Surprising how small communities work together to help each other. Anyway, we bought it to put on our dog and she didn't like it much but it did seem to keep the bugs away. Now we have a bug shelter and she is quick to get inside that as soon as we set it up.So are we sometimes. |

that rings a bell- there was an avon skin product that was being touted a few years back as a bug dope, i think it was called "skin-so-soft"... same thing as with citronella, it only worked for some people. i've always noticed that the bugs go for some people more than others. my father, who worked on survey crews in northern ontario after the war, claimed they had a french canadian cook who was totally immune- he could go out into clouds of mosquitoes or black flies without a shirt on and they wouldn't even land on him...

My partner is the same, he is never bothered by blackflies or mosquitos!! So frustrating!! And I'm a big fan of Skin So Soft!! Also heard that eating garlic and avoiding bananas helps. |

Check out what "The Happy Camper" (Kevin Callan) has to say about keeping sane in bug season, if anything it's a good chuckle: http://www.kevincallan.com/2011/05/20/camping-in-b ug-season-while-keeping-sane/ |

Ok. Tested out the Picaridin. I bought some Natrapel (20% Picaridin) at LL Cote in Errol, NH. Im not sure you can find it Canada? I highly recommend it. It worked as well as my go to, 3M Ultrathon 34% DEET Lotion. A million black flies and mosquitos this weekend and zero bites!! Smells good too. Here is link to the stuff I tested. http://www.tendercorp.com/natrapel/ |
