Good idea with the Junior Rangers. I had the same thought. While I was never a JR I have heard that they spend a portion of their time carrying surveying equipment for surveyors.(Mining and Foresttry types) I thought the JR were also a branch of the military. Would it be better if this program was moved to the MNR/Ontario Parks? Or even better a program of their own. Including volunteer Rangers as you asked John. The program can't be that expensive to operate. The most expense in most initiatives is labour and in this case the labour is free. If you pay $25/day for food per Ranger. What otehr operating costs are there. Once the captial cost are alloted it is just a matter of replacement of equipment such as stoves and tents. 100 volunteer rangers x 150 days max x $25/day = $375,000 per year. In terms of governemtn funding this is really only a drop in the bucket. I could see a budget of $500,000 to initiate a program like this would be an easy sell to the public as well. How much did John say they made in back coutnry camping fees? $70,000? wouldn't that be enough to pay for 20 Volunteer Rangers?

Ed I realize that Chris and Alex have installed boxes on sites in the past. We were last there a few years before the box was installed. |

The Junior Ranger program is now called Ontario Rangers http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/MNR/youthprograms/ranger_ life.html The ranger program has been cut back in recent years with the closing of several camps across the province. Facilities to house, camp cooks, foreman, sub formans, vehicles, insurance etc are some of the other expenditures. Minimum wage is paid minus room and board. In my day as a jr at Sandbar PP in Ignace we made $15/day plus r&b was covered. Our camp of 24 rangers did a lot of maintenance on the Turtle River system. Another branch of this program is the Ont. Stewardship program which has a location in North Bay As for Volunteer Rangers I know only of Killarney and Quetico using this system, not sure if APP has them. The biggest advantage is that wardens have a competent volunteer work with them, allowing more work to get done. This system also is used in many US National and State parks. Hopefully Temagami can achieve the Status of Killarney and Quetico in terms of alloted resources to help maintain and enhance this wilderness. |

Curly: I wonder if we could use some of those TB's in Temagami to replace some real old ones on Obabika, outside of the Park area? If we could get enough to finish off just the Upper lake, that would be helpful. |

fourmiler, I was there in 1986. Mark, Duncan and Dave were the staff foreman. Keith Morgan and Bones (Brian ?) were the jr subs ('85). Nicole and Irene were the cooks. Highlight summer. Have you made it back to the camp since? Cheers Neil
