Hi
I'm new to the board. Live down near Lake Simcoe. Planning a trip to Temagami in late Jan. There doesn't seem to be any current ice or snow reports online. Does anyone know of a source.

Thanks

Have you tried going to the main page?:

http://www.ottertooth.com/tem_index.htm

Read the reports there and then click on current conditions.

I was talking to my sister that lives on Bear Island and her Husband boated out today to the mine landing. It's slow going because there is some ice here and there. It's very tricky.
We had a small snowfall today of about 5cm. Before that we have been snow free since before Christmas.
Supposed to get real cold again for the next couple of nights , but then temps are expected to rise above the freezing mark later in the week.
We may not get any ice that would be considered safe to travel on at all this winter. I can keep ya posted weekly if you like.
It's tuff going for the lake people as breaking ice can be trecherous at times. They have no choice but to travel out for supplies.

Ferguson Bay Jan 13 2007 still a bit of open water, it probably froze over last night. There appeared to be a large area of open water at the mouth of Obabika Inlet.

That spot right there is always one of the last to freeze. I used to hike up to the top of Ferguson Mt to find out how the freeze up has come along. Thanks for that shot.

hi

I was looking at these pictures and just had a flashback of memories. One year when the lake froze it was perfect. There was so snow and the whole lake was one big skating rink!

Us kids, who would be in their mid to late 30's would put on our skates and skate everywhere. It was awesome. I'm sure our parents thought so too. We would be out skating all day.

The other memory that came back was that when you were skating you could see right down to the bottom (where the water was shallow enough of course). It was a pretty neat feeling.

Thanks a bunch for the pictures and this site. It was neat to have such a vivid memory of those days. Growing up on Lake Temagami was a pretty great experience.

Thanks for those pics Bushpilot. Hope you don't mind but I've shared them with a fishing forum to keep some friends safe.

Irish

No problem, remember the dark areas only froze Saturday night and we are getting snow today so it could be another winter of bad ice. Too bad, I was hoping to go skating on the lake like we used to do as kids. One year Kevin F. allegedly skated from town to Bear Island. An urban myth perhaps.

bush-pilot... Thanks for the photos. Ferguson Bay has been our entry/exit point for the past 5 fall adventures. Nice to see a slice of heaven with winter setting in (IN JANUARY?!?) Can the next season's dreaming and tripping be far behind?

Thanks Bush Pilot. I'm told ice is 6" to 11" in Portage Bay only (that would be hwy# 11 'till it opens up at Bell Island to the main arm. After that 1" at best. 2005 at this time it was 3 or 4 feet thick with a 90 foot wide ice road down the entire lake. At least I can get to my cottage now... and BTW wave next time you're coming into Midland... if you get down this way. My air strip is on Midland Point between Midland and Penetang Harbours.

Bush Pilot, Thanks for what you do and for the wonderful pictures. My father in law benefited from your services and is a big supporter of the Air Ambulance. If they aren't calling you, they'll call me, so keep up the good work. Obashkong Padre!

If you call Gramps Tackle just south of Temagami they can tell you the ice conditions. He puts bungalows out for ice fishing on Rabbit and I know my buddies Jan 5th trip was cancelled because of NO ice.

Dave

Sorry as much as I'd like to cruise all over the place the reality is they keep us on a pretty short leash as I'm sure you can imagine. Also we actually don't get over to Temagami all that often. All the lakes appear to be ice covered from what I saw the other day but personally I wouldn't go out on any of them, but that's just me. What I need is a cool little plane like Irish has.

I don't want to land on any of them right now either Bush Pilot! Swimming sucks this time of year!
