Not this year you're not! The lake just froze over on Sunday January 14th! Last week there was only 1" of ice on the main body of the arm...6 to 11" in Portage bay at the townsite. Lots of snowfall to insulate and start the slush process and hinder ice formation. Hoping this -25C stuff in the next few days will really help as I'd like to drive a trailer load of materials out to my island to save the boat trips...but my place is in the bay. Woould take some real cold and no snow to get an ice road in this year I think.} |

Hi Everyone, Talked to my sister at Bear Island yesterday and they have plowed the ice road from the mine landing to Bear Island, people are now driving their cars to Bear Island. She informed me that they were able to get all the snow off the ice road and with recent and future temps in the low minus twenties expected in the next week it should be a really good road this year. I will be taking it for Super Bowl Sunday!! } |

That great news about the road..I guess travel up and down the NE arm by snowmobile to town should be safe enough by now as well?? |

Good to hear Nature Freak. There was only 7" of ice there on Saturday according to a friend that was ice fishing Sat/Sun. Hope this impatience doesn't get someone killed. It was bitterly cold though over the weekend and -30C today so things are looking up. Was also told the ice is crap and slushy in the Bay by town...but the -30C may solidify that hopefully as I want to drive out to my cottage first weekend in Feb. I'd still be really careful peterme out on the NE Arm....1" was there a week ago..would think it would be just going thru 4 or 5 inches out on the main arm now. A couple nights of this -30C and you should be good to go....but I sure wouldn't be making the first set of tracks! |

Hi Peterme, They are traveling to town by snowmachine. They have been fo almost two weeks now. We have had some very frosty temperatures lately and the lake is safe now for snowmachine travel. I don't think I would drive all over with a car or truck to town but by machine your plenty safe. The ice road to Bear Island is in excellent shape and everyone is now traveling by car to the island. We are in for about aproxm 10 cm of snow over the next two days, that may bring up some slush off the trails, but hopefully we won't actually get that much snow. Stick to the trails.} Good Luck on your fishing trip, I also hear the fishing is good so far this year! |

I'll be up on Saturday and hope to drive out to my place. As ojig says...YES sledding is fine down the NE arm, although on Jan 19th I bet you'd have wanted to know the lake well (and I don't in winter) and been hard on the throttle to boot. |

Hiya everyone! Had a great Super Bowl Sunday at Bear Isalnd with my family. The ice road was awesome! It only took us 45 mins to travel from town , down the mine road and across the ice road. Fantasic! Even the mine road was in great shape compared to what it is usually like( lake temagami access road, for those of you who only know it by that name). We even got to stop and be good samaritans by helping a couple of young southren gents out of a snowbank on the ice road. They had been having some fun spinning around on the ice road in a little black convertible Miata, when they careened into the bank, silly boys!! It was also a blustry day and the lake effect snow blowing across the lake gave the ice road the impression of having huge heaves in it that were very deceiving to the naked eye. It turned out to be flater then a pancake. Well done and a big laurel wreath to the driver who plows the ice road for us lakers!!! Thought of you Irishfeild, and wondered how you made out on your trip up! Hope it was as exciting as mine was! I have always loved the adrenaline rush I get on my first trip across frozen water!!!I LOVE THE NORTH!!!! Catch ya in the snowdrifts!!! }

Your weather has been super cold and by checking the snowmobilers web site for trails..it shows not much snow this year so far..I bet the conditions are ideal for the ice road to be plowed right down the arm into town...any plans for this?? maybe it is already done? cheers and thanks peterme |

peterme..late getting around to this but the ice was only 10 inches thick in front of my place. The snow machine packed lake area where I drilled for fishing was about 16" or so. There is an ice road from the town ramp,,,but only about 5 cottages past my place in Portage Bay and only because two of my neigbours packed it and flooded it using their power augers. You sure wouldn't be going any further than that by vehicle. Not sure what gives this year with -30's for MANY days...but it sure didn't make ice. |

Irishfield: Maybe that means we are going to get an early ice-out. I am squirming in my seat at the prospect. |

ed Maybe its the roids that are making you squirm in your seat ? You should see a doctor before paddling season begins?

Should be clear sailing by sled. Total snow fall on the ground... 6" maximum back on the 9th. Was like driving south vs North as the snow got less and less as we drove North. Not what you would think,... Yes Ed..I'm thinkin should be another early ice out...with the limited amounts out there at this point. This shot gives you an idea of how little snow there is up there...compared to the 4 feet I have in the yard here in Penetang!
