My friend and I are hoping to head back to Temagami early August for a week of canoe-camping. Two summers ago, we started at Mowat Landing (access road was no problem) and ended up camping at the southern end of Lake Lady Evelyn for a few days. Loved it! This year, we're thinking about possibly doing the Lake Temagami, Diamond, Obabika loop. We've read that the route 805 access to the western edge of Obabika Lake and the Red Squirrel access road to Ferguson Bay are generally very rough, especially for a small car, which is what we'll have. Sounds like we should probably avoid these roads, right? What's the Lake Temagami access road like in comparison? It seems quite a bit farther to do the loop from this access road. Comments? |

Where 805 ends to the gate is quite rough. When we were there in September I did see a Honda made it through but that is a oil pan smash wating to happen if you ask me. 805 was great but the logging road beond that was an experience. I got pictures if you want to see what it was like.

For each of the past couple summers Red Squirrel has been great. From my understanding the logging companies have begun to use it more and therefore have cleaned it up. The surface is much smoother than I remember it being a couple years ago and the number of trees that encroach has been vastly reduced. In general I have traveled it mid-July through early August. My only caution is that if you intend to put-in at Sandy Inlet the tertiary road that leads to the lower parking lot (see http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/map_tem_at las_sandy.htm) can get rather interesting after a decent rain and we (I run a tripping program for a summer camp) no longer risk it with either our vans or a school bus. That being said there are still always some cars (including small ones) in the lower parking lot but I'm not sure if they might be there for most of the summer (A Wanapeit'er might be able to give you a better answer). Hope this helps (and happy tripping), Peter |

Amigo: You could start from the Central Access road on Temagami and do that loop in 3 days if you were in a hurry.Five or 6 days would give you lots of time to enjoy the trip. I usually travel north from the access road to Sharp Rock Inlet and into Diamond counterclockwise. You should know that it is the busiest loop in the area during the Summer.
