With ice out early & a mild winter, will the black flies be gone earlier this year? Planning to be there mid-June. Last time I went that early, they were nasty. |

They are coming on schedule, kind of, - we saw first small gangs on May 6, still in vegetarian state of mind. |

Thanks. After a mid-June trip in 2008, I vowed I'd never do it again. However, it's nice & quiet on the lake then. |

They are there right now, sharpening up their knives and forks in preparation for the big feast coming up on the long weekend, when all you canoeists and fishers plan to be out there. |

Thanks, Ed! And it's interesting to see how you plan your trips "around" long weekends and probably opening days.... |

Well Erhard, if I was going to stay out for the long weekend, I would have brought along my bug house. I did have it with me, but didn't feel the necessity to set it up until a few days ago. But it was time to leave. |

The period between ice-out and ~ mid May is usually bug free. This year ice-out was early and there was almost a month of bug free tripping available. Offsetting the enjoyment of this anomaly were some very cold temperatures. |
