Hi All,

my first post after searching awhile for such message board. I am planning an 18 days camping/fishing trip in August. It'll be me and my 2 year old son, a friend of mine with his 3 year old son and my 16' fiberglas power boat (60HP motor). We want to do 5-6 days in Temagami and then move to Algonquin for the remaining 12 days. Problem is I don't know much about Temagami and need any and all help I could get.
I understand there is plenty of crown land there, so no permits and no camping fees needed. But how do I find the best launching spot, good camping site in good fishing area?
Fishing is very important;-) What can we fish for, what bait/lures? How do I know which land is crown, which is not?
Any good sites for into/maps/personal trip logs similar to Algonquin Adventures web site?
Any and all info you could share and point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

My personal suggestion would be to call a place
like "Temagami Shores" or "Finlayson". Both have
boatdock for tie-up, bait, advice etc... and plan
more of the "day-trip" kind of thing, back & forth. This may not be what you're envisioning
but a lot of the territory around here, and perhaps the expertise of the forum-members, is for
more of the paddle-and-portage thing. (and, i have
portaged a 60hp once in an emergency on Animanip but, never willingly, or ever again...)

Lake Temagami, Lady Evelyn, etc... are pretty "big water" and "pretty intensely changeable"... and I (respectfully) would have
difficulty with personal conscience, saying too much in terms of recommending much with children that young. We lost 16 teenagers up here on a
canoe-trip-gone-bad a few years ago, and the horrors of those memories haunt a lot of us...
I think you'll find.

I dont mean at all, to dampen your intentions, but the only advice I CAN give... and given your
words that you dont know the area... is do what
you ARE doing... which is, consult the locals heavily aforehand, and plan even MORE cautiously
(in Temagami area) than all advice AND your own gut-feeling initially seems to warrant.

If you go back thru past threads/archives on the Ottertooth site, you'll gather a lot of personal insight into the territory...

Hope this helps.
I'm sure other members will hop in with more thoughts, and suggestions.

Dear happycamper
Sundown had great advice. Other things to consider are, rock can damage fiberglass easily and Temagami is 99% rock so camping could only be done on a beach unless you moore the boat offshore. The lake has afew beaches with campsites . Temagami has rough terrain so you will need to watch the kids like a Hawk.

I spent a week north of Devil bay in fiberglass boat...had our sons zodiac to ferry us back & forth. We found a sheltered bay behind a schoal but I agree , this water is treacherous...The last day we had 3' swells breaching the schoal & almost put the boat on the rocks when the anchors let go.You need a good depth chart(as in any lake) & the best one I could find was a local fishing map from Bait shop just south of the access road. I would use this even if you stay at Finlayson and when you think you know where you are, be afraid, be sure! The schoals here are deadly...wait 5 yrs to bring the boys deeper in, too many hazzards to even consider with 2-3yr old babys. GPS was a great help once tracks were laid whic I have if anyone wants from govt dock north.
Have a great summer!
My recomendation for Ontario park with those boys is Bon Echo...plenty of hiking, motor boat lakes & canoe lakes.
