ok, it's a slow week & i'm stuck down here in t.o. with the canoe still hanging from the garage rafters.
thought i'd ask to see if anyone's had "strange" experiences in temagami, i.e. ghosts, unexplained natural or supernatural experiences, or otherwise unclassifiable doings seen, heard of, or otherwise documented or undocumented.
i'm looking for creepy places, odd occurrences, anything slightly beyond the pale in the region.
myself, i have had some of these experiences... but i'll wait to see if anyone else responds to this thread. this is a serious inquiry.

About 15 years ago I was working at Smoothwater Outfitters, tying rental canoes onto cars for the summer. A high school group was finishing up their trip at the lodge. I asked the leader how their trip was. She said fine, but they had a very weird experience one night. Long story short, the campsite creeped them all out. I knew what route they had taken, so I showed her a map and pointed at a specific campsite, and said, "I bet that's where you had your problems." Of course, that was the campsite they had visited! She asked me how I knew. I had simply looked at the geological fault line which bisects Temagami, from Ishpatina Ridge to the Ottawa River. Then I looked at where their trip crossed that line. Sure enough, there was a campsite there, the one that had creeped this group out.

Anyone else have spooky experiences along this fault line? I've wondered if it is a ley line.

My wife and I each have one, but first, Curly; can you describe on the FOT map where that fault line runs? I do see a natural "valley" running from the north end of Scarecrow Lake, east-south-east through Diamond, Ferguson Bay and then it gets hard to track. Is that it? If so, both our experiences are at sites on this line.

Hey Maramar, Yes, Scarecrow-Airplane-Florence-Deep-Diamond-Sandy Inlet-Red Squirrel-Jackpine-Kanichee-Net-Sunrise-Rabbit-Maxa m, then I think down North Ottertail Creek all the way to the Ottawa. The route these kids took was the Maxam loop (Rabbit-Matabitchuan-Cooper-Maxam etc.) and the spooky campsite was on Maxam Lake. This was the traditional snowshoe route across Temagami, only 14 overland sections between the Ottawa and Scarecrow. The fault line lies right underneath Camp Wanapitei, which is my alma mater. I think this explains why Wanapitei is so weird LOL.

BTW, the weirdest thing that ever happened to me at Wanapitei.... I'll get back to that when I have more time.

C'mon grncnu, you can't start something and duck out right away...cough it up, I say (wink!)...or is your experience so terrifying that you shudder at the thought of writing about it, lol! I understand...

Curly, when you get around to sharing yours, do tell also the specifics of that group's experience on Maxam, if you can recall. BTW, the only thing I can see now whenever I look at the FOT map is that darn fault line cutting it in half, lol).

Ok, so above I mentioned that we have stories of our own, three altogether. The first one I'll share took place in late August 2007 when I took my son for his first fly-in, paddle out trip. The last two nights saw us at the northern-most campsite on the rocky point directly across (west) from Ferguson Mtn on the west shore of Temagami (about 1.5 km south of the fault line area).

On the second night, I was woken up by sounds outside the tent. For what seemed like an hour (but more likely only 20 minutes or so), I lay there listening to the "walking" as our tent was continously circled. Imagining the "size" of what was out there was not what was, shall we say,...ahem... of "interest" to me. I knew it was small....but most definitely, most assuredly, beyond any shadow of a doubt to my bush-sound savvy ears, also walking on TWO feet! I thought better of waking my 14 yro son to take in these "night sounds" with me...he slept through it (lucky lad!). I can't recall if this occurred to me at the time or the next day, but being of First Nations descent, I thought of the "maemaegawaeshe"...the Little People. As some may know, "Little People" occurr in the mythologies and worldviews of many cultures (for example, the leparchauns and fairies of the celtic peoples). Well we Indians got' em too and as is typical in Indian Country, depending on the region you are in, there are differences of interpretation as to their meaning/purposes. I have heard both that they benevolent (helping and playing with small or lost children) and malevolent (leading children astray into the deep bush to fall prey to darker forces). Anyway, "Little People" is exactly what it sounded like...that expression we use for the sound of small children scurying about; "the pitter-patter of little feet"...well, that hits it on the head. A few minutes into the experience I thought I began to hear drumming too...but then came to realize it was just the sound of my blood pounding in my ears and temples, ha! Seriously though, I did "settle" before too long and came to trust that whatever it was, no harm was coming to us. Sleep returned.

You know, I can't recall if I told my son about it in the morning or not...or if I ever have, hmmm! Rest assured though, tobacco was put down, as it always is, but with an extra pinch at this site for the Little People.

My wife is still deciding whether or not to share hers (I was with her, but slept through it). But not before others post something now...over to you folks....

Back in the mid-90s, an archaeologist was spending the summer digging at the mouth of the Red Squirrel River at Camp Wanapitei. He found many interesting things, but this was by far the most haunting.

Beside the Red Squirrel Cabin, which is right next to the bridge that goes over the mouth of the river, he uncovered a "white dog burial." I don't know the specifics of this practice, but suffice to say that a white dog would be sacrificed as part of a religious ceremony. Now comes the spooky part. Later that night, all the dogs in the camp (from golden retrievers and huskies to beagles and Jack Russell terriers) gathered around the hole that the white dog had been buried in and howled for a good hour.

wow, those are actually pretty creepy stories! and i'm thinking curly might be on to something with that fault line theory, maybe connected to their use as winter roads for who knows how many centuries. funny you mentioned maxam, i remember passing by that campsite a few years back and pushing on to rabbit even though it was late in the day.
i believe i have heard similar noises to what you describe, maramar; also unexplained "mischievous" occurrences like the time i spent 20 minutes trying to find a pot lid i dropped in the lake, only to find it an hour later five feet from the water leaning against a tree...
i think people are generally reluctant to admit to strange experiences as it tends to attract humorous comments of the "what was he on at the time?" type.
although i have been creeped out many times in temagami, there was one incident on the florence river of all places, which really was bizarre and seemingly inexplicable. also difficult to describe unfortunately, at least to convey exactly what it was that made it inexplicable.
we (my wife and i) were going upstream towards florence lake in low water in mid august. there was no perceptible current and no wind, it was a clear sunny day. i noticed some disturbance in the water on my left, a foot or two away from the east bank and well out of the main channel. when we canoed up to it appeared to be a perfectly round "whirlpool" about a foot and a half wide, whirling at a phenomenal speed, far faster than an eddy (and as i said there was no current even in the main channel, no wind, everything else was perfectly still). also, unlike an eddy it did not move and shift about with the flow of water; the whole time we watched it- at least a minute or more- it stayed exactly in the one place, in a still pool where there was absolutely no flow of water. we were staring at it from less than 2 feet away, it was right beside the canoe. the truly bizarre thing was the power and speed of the thing-- it actually made a sort of rushing noise and there was a slight mist rising from the edges... after a minute it slowly died out.
i've tried to think of a rational explanation for what we saw that day and i'm still stumped- that was around 15 years ago.

I'll say Florence River is along the fault line....

Some other fault line occurrences:

All 3 Red Squirrel Road blockades were along the line, at Pencil Lake, Sharp Rock, and Barmac Lake.

Two of Temagami's characters (Sevan and Dimitri) have cabins along the fault.

And this just occurred to me, Dan Trask's car was left along the fault (Wanapitei parking lot), and his clothing was found along the fault (across from Diamond Lake pictographs).

Figured it was time to register myself on Ottertooth….maramar’s wife here….so, creepy story time! I’ve had a few strange experiences in the Temagami area….one such experience was on Diamond Lake in June 2009 while camping on a small island just northeast of the 2 big islands in the “hub” of Diamond (the site isn’t marked on the FOT map). One night (I think about 1:30 a.m.) I was woken by something very difficult to describe….it was a very loud, god-awful “scream” coming from the northeast (Mosquito Lk area?). It was definitely NOT a human sound, but didn’t sound like a bird or animal either. I grew up in a very isolated northern community and “the bush” was literally our playground….but I’ve never heard anything like this before and I really can’t imagine what it was. If I remember correctly, I heard it 3 times. Each “scream” lasted several seconds. Creepy definitely describes it. Would sure like to know if others have had a similar experience. We were there 2 nights but heard it only the first.

I had a “not creepy,” but rather beautiful experience on Obabika Lake later that same summer. We were staying at the island campsite right across from Ranger Point and during the night I could see a “blanket” of intense white light covering the entire Spirit Forest. It really was something to see.

And just one more story for this post…this one took place on the portage between Fenton and Treeby Lakes in the north part of Lake Superior Provincial Park. As I was beginning the portage while maramar was getting the canoe up on his shoulders, I heard beautiful flute music intermittently for about 3 minutes. At first, I was convinced that there must be campers up on Treeby but as it turned out, there was no one around. Then, I remembered that once at Spirit Rock/Chee-Skon with Alex Mathias, he said that after drumming at Spirit Rock one night he had an experience of hearing flute music. So, that’s the “connection” to Temagami…and also, Curly, it is possible that the fault line you pointed out could extend past the Ishpatina Ridge…if so, it would quite likely run through the Fenton/Treeby area. Perhaps you have a geological fault line map you could share.

The only specifics I remember of the high school group on Maxam was a lot of garbage and a baby doll partially burned in the fire pit. I don't think they could really put their finger on why the spot creeped them out.

curly, i assume one of the cabins you refer to is the one on the sandspit in the middle of florence lake?
tidewater, i have also heard those unearthly screams, several times during my 45-year experience (yikes) camping in the wilds. someone once told me it was the sound of a rabbit being killed by a predator but if you've heard it that's hard to believe...
maramar mentioned the memegweishis but not the wendigo...

No, that's not the cabin I mean. Those who know these two people will appreciate the significance of their hideaways along the fault. For those who have not yet met them, I hope you will be fortunate enough to make their acquaintance soon. However, that Florence cabin "Good Tent" is pretty spooky itself, and is along the fault.

I've heard unearthly screams too. One was likely a lynx. The other was probably an aptly named screech owl. Not to say that spirits, benevolent or otherwise, don't scream from time to time. Come to think of it, my cougar litter sighting near Red Squirrel Lake was not too far from the fault.

grncnu, it seems quite apparent that you know the scream/sound of which I speak! Yes, I know that rabbits make a loud, baby-like cry when being killed, but as you know, what we have heard is "a far cry" from that. Deer of course, have their own squeal...but again, not even close to what I heard. What I heard was so much more haunting and unforgettable....even the sheer volume. It does certainly bring Wendigo to mind. I have also thought of Sasquatch....there were many stories associated with sightings/markings of this in the James Bay area where I grew up. I myself came across massive footprints in the snow with a friend of mine in the late 60s....it really stops you in your own tracks! Many tracks have been found in the clay banks along the Moose River and a fellow from Moose Factory went so far as to cut one out like a clay mold and took it to MNR...where he was told it was a bear paw print...imagine, trying to tell a Cree he doesn't know what a bear paw print looks like!

yes, I agree with Curly on the cabin (gone now) on Florence Lake...very spooky. I was there with 2 arhaeologists who were studying past cultures and everyone got scared..Its not so much the cabin, It's the general location. Maybe just the stories at work but everyone was on edge ,,,some more than others.
I've know that "feeling" on certain locations on Florence though.

grncnu; meant to ask you in an earlier post here about your "serious inquiry" on this subject. Are you just curious, or, perhaps have an idea for a book on the topic? John Robert Columbo has written quite extensivley on all manner of the "unexplained" in Canada, but I would feel safe in betting he hasn't written one about Temagami. He even edited a book on the Windigo, actually. It would be an interesting undertaking....if not you, then perhaps our resident author here on Ottertooth...Brian, you interested????lol

I have to say though, that I'm surprised that a week into this thread, there hasn't been much more than there is. As for me and my wife above, compared to so many others here on this forum, including you and Curly, we actually have very little experience in the Temagami backcountry. Surely there has to be more out there...a lot more...

so that cabin is gone? it seemed in pretty decent shape not that long ago. anyone know what happened to it?
one thing that always struck me is that florence is really 2 completely different lakes, and the sandspit, which parallels the fault, is the dividing line. for example the water is a different colour, the winds are quite different, the scenery and the whole general atmosphere is different...
as far as the screaming sound goes, i know what a screech owl sounds like so i can rule that out- plus, as tidewater says this is just much louder and more powerful than that, i don't think any small animal could produce a sound like that. it had a sort of maniacal quality that did not sound like a distressed animal at all. of course all these experiences are subjective and very much "you had to be there", but it's very interesting to hear about them anyway and possibly find correlations with your own.

hey maramar, just saw your post. no, all i meant was that i wanted the question to be taken seriously. i agree that this kind of experience should be documented, even if only because it's interesting and we all kind of enjoy being creeped out (except at the moment when it's actually happening of course).
i also agree there is much more out there but people tend to be reluctant to admit they've had things happen they can't easily rationalize and that don't necessarily fit in with their view of the world.

Regarding response above from curly July 16: "And this just occurred to me, Dan Trask's car was left along the fault (Wanapitei parking lot), and his clothing was found along the fault (across from Diamond Lake pictographs)."

Daniel spoke of an experience he had on Maple Mtn, talking to his grandparents along with a lime green snake he befriended up their on the tower. Also, the canoe group who found his clothing experienced a shooting star moment that evening, perhaps the spirits were trying to show a sign of their presence. I was not aware of the fault line, but interesting, curious.

OK, this is weird, anyone heard of "a very large hair covered creature" sighting by Mr. & Mrs. D. Heibert on Apr. 15, 2009? This is the first I've heard of any "bigfoot" in Temagami, certainly odd. http://www.ontariobigfoot.com/Temagami%20Bigfoot.h tml

I've heard a few things about bigfoot in Temagami. No first hand accounts though. Have a read over this:

Could someone give me the coordinates where Dan's car was located?
We have been investigating, and logging, both sasquatch reports, and disappearances for the area.

The latest sighting, with a good photo, was indeed the Heiberts. One disappearane was Ben Matine, several years ago, who was a sasquatch investigator. All the disappearances, we belive, were lone hikers.

We also believe that the OPP, and MNR know more than they are making public.

I should add that very near my location, we have been tracking sasquatch sightings for some time. On 19th July, a lone lady hiker went missing. Capreol is 10 minutes from my home, and 5kms east of where we are investigating the sasquatch sighting.

http://www.thesudburystar.com/2012/07/18/woman-mis sing-since-monday

When the witnesses took us to the location, we found several bare footprints, in swamp mud. No boot sole was evident, and the stride was 39 inches. Obviously not a normal size human adult.

We do not speculate, just follow the evidence, and see where it leads.
