Any one with 3 or 4 hours to kill in Temagami really should check out the White Bear Forest trails. It's a short paddle from the Temagami Boat Livery on Snake Lake to the dock at Pecours Bay, trail maps are available at Temagami Outfitters. I hiked the the figure 8 trail (I forget the trail name) through the central part of the penninsula. A beautiful walk through old growth forest. |

Trails are also accessible from the Caribou Mt fire tower parking lot. |

I've thought about walking that trail over the years. I'll be in Temagami beginning Sept 8 and I'm going to walk it this year. Thanks bush pilot! |

This photo is along the way to another old growth patch south of Cooper Lake. Do you remember your trip to this one bush pilot? |

Always wondered about that camp as it may be an old logging camp. Know the owners? |

Brian, Your quite likely right about it originally being an old logging camp. What I can remember from gatherings at the Arkoka Camp is that one of the original owners was Leo Belanger. I don't recall where he was from. The next owner was Sandy Pontrell from Ohio. Consequently the camp was nicknamed "Ohio Camp". I'm told Sandy was a trapper. When Sandy died his daughter inherited the camp. She was a lawyer in Florida. In the late 1990s a lightning strike took out the structures (kitchen & ice shack) near the middle of the island. There wasn't much activity around the camp until she sold it to Chuck Chandra in 2002. Chuck is from the Delhi Ontario area and is quite familiar with the area. He has since built a self supporting cabin on the island and restored two of the original cabins on the south end. |

wrn109 I remember this camp well from my days working at Lakeland Airways. I'm not surprised about it belonging to a trapper at one time, I seem to recall a lot of stuffed animals in the cabins. |
