I heard that Bell Mobility is discontinuing analog cellular service in the Temagami area this fall
Is this true?
What are people replacing their old 3 watt analog bag phones with?

I cant get a straight answer from Bell .
No surprise there!!!!

Rogers already kicked all us dedicated analog customers off their service as of June 1st and we had to go GSM (or what ever it's now called). Bell is ~ a year behind them and will be in the same boat. I've been using my 7 watt or so Motorola analog since 1986 and had to retire it. My new POS seems to work in most place on Lake Temagami itself. Really have my doubts in the back country.

Yep,

My dad had to change phones and our old bag phone was the only "truly reliable phone up there". He was shipped a free phone but it had no signal strenght. He argued hard and got another phone...very strong signal phone and it works great. Cannot remember what type..but they were asking for quite a bit of money but he argued..ie: your discontinuing service, it's a matter of safety, etc...and they gave it to him free. Will find out this week while I am in Temagami what kind of phone it is..so I can post if that helps.

Kim,

It's the Motorola M900 field phone. Not a small phone but it works very well. My cell (a Treo from Bell) could not get a bar but my dad's phone worked great..even using the speaker phone function so the kids could hear their mom. My dad got it free (usually $500)after making a fuss....

Here's the link to the phone: http://www.motorola.com/consumer/v/index.jsp?vgnex toid=1bd206da427ed010VgnVCM1000008206b00aRCRD&show =productHome
Hope this helps.

I was up on the Maple Mountain run just last week, and they are still using Analogue signal. In fact, Rogers is crap up there as my fried who was with me could not place a call at all. I got a call through to home from the summit on full strength analogue to the two cell towers south of 558 on Hwy 11. Yes, that is a long way from the mountain, but it was the only clear line of sight to get full signal - and, could barely move my head at that. If analogue stops, I suspect anyone with digital is simply not getting through. Hopefully people have listening stations for GMRS 2-way radios up there.
