Brian It's a miracle the lady driving the car wasn't seriously injured! Darrin from Lakeland was telling us in early June that a moose gets hit pretty much every night on highway 11 near Temagami this time of year. We saw a dead calf on highway 17 just east of North Bay when we were up, and several LARGE red stains on the asphalt on highway 11 between North Bay and Temagami. Please drive carefully. |

"Mad Cow" Better to keep yer distance from moon-struck Moose on tha loose. Fer Ther demeanor may show a bit of distemper. Moose that be mad get even. 'Tis Twig-Eater, who inhabits NE forested areas of Canada, may feel a bit threatened if crowded/or be provoked. Moose madness rages-on if backpacker, hiker/or canoe portager moves too close into large mammals confort zone. Traveler passer-by may put Moose on full alert, maken 'tis "Monarch of tha Forest Woods Water" angry/or a bit afraid. When intruder actions get too close to Inn-Keepers waters & woods air space, Moose may infact react, then ya best back off. Fer when Mooses long dark hairs R grizzed raised straight-up on humped shoulders neck & big ears laid all tha way back R tell-tale signs that Moose be mad as hall. Thence watch-out! Fer 'tis Moose can run loose all over U. 'Tis over-grown deer will run U into tha ground & then use its front long legs with big sharp hoofs to kick-back. Try getten between a Mother Moose & Her calf to see what may indeed happen. Good luck! U may need it. Always plan ahead when moven on animal path trails that U use too. Keep in mind an escape route to find a groupen of 3 triangular grouped together trees to hide with-in if mad Moose moves on U/or run to a climbable tree to get clear & free. Moose that run loose R mad bout U, Heya! |

We just traveled down south to TO and back 2 weekend ago. Luckly we didn't see any moose, but they do have great big construction signs warning people to slow down, between Temigami and North Bay. The moose are not the only animals sighted in abundance this year. There are a lot of rabbits, fox's and black bears around on the highways and back roads. |

Hey canoebear...another thing that makes our cow " mad " is grizzly! Once we got up really! early when staying at Many Glacier Hotel in the heart of Glacier Park. We went on a game drive and were very surprised to come upon three moose running helter skelter in and out of out buildings, parking lots, ranger station, etc. They acted crazy and we stayed right in the car and watched and filmed the moose. It was until later that we realized that grizzlies must have spooked them and driven them from the hills and mountainsides down into the ' people world '. Best Paul |

Hey Paul, Last time I recollect be-en in Glacier National Park Montana was in Septembers Autumn Fall of 1976, went with my folks on a family vacation. "Tis past trip had been forgotten & overlooked till U had recalled it, to mind. We arrived late night & saw a mother moose & large calf cross in front of car campers trailer path. We found a campen spot near sum campen girls tent set-up that was yards away. I recall tha sounds of gigglen & laughen go-ens-on at ther camp-site. We ate late, played sum card games, then settled-in fer tha nights rest. All wer tucked in sleepen bags, mom, dad, my 2 sisters & me all sound asleep. In dead of night, felt trailer rocken side-aways, back & forth. Then heard scratchen sound under trailers view window. Thought-it to be a bad dream. Did tha manly thin, & pulled wool army blankets over dang head & went fast asleep agin. 'Twas awakened next early morn by parks rangers tellen us that park was now closed & had to leave at once cause a killer Bear was bout. Ranger said area was not safe to be in anymore. He stated that a girl in tent down from U, was mauled, so please gather yer things & leave right away. Tha rangers before leaven, pointed-out that same Grizz had in-fact try to do us in 1st, cause ther wer clawed pawed scratch-up marks & a hugh dent under view window of family big yellow campen trailer. He then said that we had been hit. We gathered-up our thins & saw 3 gals cry-en, holden hands up to ther faces say-en, oh poor Mary, why Mary? Tha 2 moose we saw that night, might of been try-en to keep safe distance from that soon to be "Killer Grizzly". & to think, that, that same big brown of Bears had plans to hav, 1 canoebear, on tha table fer His late-night meal serven, Licken his chops at tha window over me! Not my time, just yet. May hav dodged tha bullet once agin. Not very lucky/ but fer sur, blessed. As far as that girl camper, Her name was Mary, from Il., mauled to her death by parks Grizzly Bear. It could of been me, but 'twas not my time to die. Never trust a Bear & remember, 1's never safe in Bear Country. Watchen other animals re-actions, like those 2 moose runnen, might of been out of fear, wood of been a warnen sign of danger that Grizz was up & bout, ready fer action. Poor Mary, I tried to put bad memories on tha back burner. Don't wanna dwell on negativity, but sum-times bring thins back to 1's mind can prevent this thing from ever happenen agin to me. Camp safely, & watch-out fer what tha Moose R do-en. Moose R tha eyes & ears of wilderness waters portage woods, Heya! |

"Out & About at Night" Spring/summer, loose moose move from winteren yards to calven feeden grounds. Moose on tha move, lick excess salt accumulation left along side of clear path roadways. Moose also drink depressioned salt pools that still be standen in rained fill season. 'Tis Twig-Eaters lacken sodium from tha bark, branches & such, make a straight bee-line fer salt pilled-up paths & ponds that be near & bout cleared-out roadways. Summers heats-up pesky bugs, which drive Moose madness onto clear road paths. In fall rut, racked-out Bull Moose R runnen hot on Sows scented clear path roadway trail. Early wintery year, Moose migration too winteren areas agin in full circle. Keep Moose-stuck cleared path roadways, "SALT FREE" & may reduce road-kills in NE! Put a hault-on tha salt trucks, Heya! |
