I've been reading through this site and its forum -- great place to learn about Temagami! I'm travelling there in the next few weeks for the first time. I have a few questions I'm hoping some folks could help with. While I'm a fairly experienced canoist, I'm taking my girlfriend who has never been in one before. We are likely renting a cottage on Ogama Island. Does anyone think it would be too difficult for a first-timer to paddle from the access road to Ogama Island? Also, is Ogama Island a decent place to lift off for one and two day trips? Thanks! |

If the weather is fine the paddle from the road should be okay. From Ogama you could go into Spawning Lake or just stay on Lake Temagami. Lots of options. |

Thanks, brian! I'm really looking forward to this trip. It's going to be very interesting, because I've spent a lot of time in the woods/on waterways, but I've never yet taken anyone who has basically spent their entire life in the city. Truthfully, I'm hoping it's going to be an eye-opener, but I'll keep my expectations low. Anyhow, I've been trying to get a decent map of that part of the Lake, but I can't find one online and Hap Wilson's latest book doesn't help either. Any suggestions? |

beleafer: Ogama Island is covered on the topo map, Lake Temagami 41I/16. If you did what Brian is suggesting and go into Spawning Lake you would likely need to purchase Obabika Lake 41 P/1 , covering the North end of Lake Temagami and then 31 M/4 to pick up Spawning lake.As it turns out the route to Spawning lake ends up being in the corners of 3 adjacent maps. An alternate route , using only the Temagami Lake map would be to go from Ogama Island, South West, passing Narrows Island and then go into Skunk Lake and spend a day or two in there. It's actually a pretty Lake in spite of the name. Or go West into Hebert and then into Gull. But the portaging may not prove to be popular for your first trip. You can usually pick up Topo maps of the Temagami area in the community. |

canoebear, Hope you like Chinese, as far as I know the only good eaten place is chinese in Temagami. There is 2 chinese eaten places, one is busy the other not, eat at the busy one. It is the first one north of the gas station, lake side of # 11, good icecream too. Check out the tower. If you don't mind the climb. Gives you a good overview of the town and area. Also take the Mine Rd. (Temagami Access Rd.) and check out the Old Growth near by. Drive the Red Squirrel Road. Bill |

Canoebear: Been away East travelling to National Parks etc. Heard this morning that it is cold up there in Temagami country. You need to bring your long john's. Can't help you with the food but bush pilot has some thoughts. Bushpilot: I think I saw your big machine flying over (near) Smoothwater Lake a few times this spring, in late May, when I was up that way. Noisy thing. But not as bad as those old Hueys that go wump wump wump as they travel along. They would wake the dead. |

Hey canoebear...have a great trip! For those of you I promised a copy of my painting CROSS OF THE NORTH I can report it is all carved and tooled and the first layer of colors has been put on. I will get black fox to help me post it on the board. I think it is a pretty good likeness of my good buddy canoebear. Bush Pilot...I still haven't read the Austin Airways Story. Such things as getting rear ended on the highway seem to interfere with my rocking chair on the front porch hours! Best Paul |

If you take the Temagami access Road out, Loon Lodge is not bad place to grab some grub too! The weather has just gone back up it is about 25-26oC today but with the humidity it feels even warmer. Lots of rain too. It has been a pretty cool summer. A few days ago it was down to 3oC. Good luck with the weather Canoe Bear! Paul M. |
