This is from an email I received this morning:

"I just wanted to let you know that Lakeland Lodge had a fire and the main lodge was completely destroyed"

Lakeland Lodge is located on Bushy Bay of Wanipitei Lake in the Chiniguchi area in Western Temagami.
Sad story... Lakeland is one of the oldest (maybe the oldest?) lodge in the area...

The photo is dated January 19th 2013, so we can only assume this must have happened on or about the 18th.

What year was it built? Was it in operation? I assume because the fire was not witnessed, then it was closed for the winter.

Bucky and Gail Olivier own Lakeland and have lived there year round for as long as I have known them.

Brian may be able to provide some history on the lodge...

I believe it was built in the late 1920s, right around the time that the lake was dammed to its current level. I think Micmac is correct that it is the oldest lodge in the area. The building was full of a lot of unique and historic items that Buck and Gail had collected from the area. Yes, Lakeland was still operating. What a tragedy. This must be hard on the Oliviers who have lived there year-round for decades.

There is no road access to Lakeland Lodge - they are located on an island.
Maybe you're thinking about Sportsman's Lodge on Kukagami Lake?

hmm... no it was definitely on the wanapitei side, on a road (assuming my memory serves) that branched off to the north- and it looked like an old lodge-type property. there wasn't anyone around though.
anyway condolences to the owners!

Just came upon this post and wondering if the cause was determined? Were the owners living there at the time of the fire? So sad.

I think this is the place I did a food drop for Jon Berger a few years back. They had a flag system to draw the boat from the island to the mainland access from the Kukagami Road. I saw Jon at this year's WCA Symposium in February and he didn't mention the fire. He stayed at the lodge before starting the second part of his canoe trip back to Temagami to promote 'Canoe Atlas Of The Little North'.

It is the same lodge Jon used. I just sent him an email in case he didn't hear.

Further to the fire, I received a reply from John, their son-in-law:
"Buck and Gail live there year round. One guest was staying in a separate cabin at the time and spotted the fire at 3:00 AM. He woke up Buck and Gail and the three of them fought the fire with a water pump till 8:00 AM but were not able to contain the fire. It looked like the fire started around the older wood stove, where the pipe left the building and entered the chimney."

This is such a loss for Buck and Gail, but a blessing noone was hurt. They confirmed, Daniel was not there; another long shot answered.

Does anyone know if they are still allowing parking this summer 2013?
