I just posted photos from private pilot Ron Miller and Obabika resident Natasha Mathias in the Break-up Watch section. I am working on more from helicopter pilot Andy Stevens.

I spoke to Alex M. an hour ago and he told me about the pictures of the water coming over the old logging dam on the Obabika River. He said this is the highest water level has seen on the Obabika R. and he has already moved his dock 5 times this spring.

He also told me there is still about 2 feet of snow on the unplowed road north of Emerald Lake where the 805 ends.

Hmmmm. It is going to be a while before one can travel this area.

Ed
There are still parts of Red Sq. road still snow covered. However it is very warm and windy today, there has been a dramatic reduction in ice cover south of highway 17 over the last few days.

Ed, I think Andy is saying you should bring your snowshoes.

Today was the day to leave for points north. At least that is what I had put in my calendar in early January.Oh well. The weather wins again. Maybe later this week the snow will disappear. It always does, so snowshoes aren't needed. Besides, I have done my winter camping and snowshoeing for this year.

Reports from Algonquin has ice-out on Canoe Lake:

Historically, Lake Temagami goes about 7-8 days after Algonquin which, coincidently, seems to coincides with the spring peak on the Sturgeon and she appears about to crest:

So mid next week (7-8TH) seems like a good bet!

Can anyone hazard a guess whether smaller lakes west of Obabika, North of the Sturgeon Lake will be ice free for this coming weekend, May 3/4/5? Trying to figure out if it's worth a trip.

I was on Red Squirrel this past week with my car, I went as far as theiving bear with no issues at all. The road is nearly all clear with very little snow in sheltered, shaded areas. The road is a little soft in spots but nothing of concern up to that point (driving a Honda civic). Hopefully gamble lk road will be as clear this coming weekend; without too many muddy washed out areas.... If anyone has any feedback it would be greatly appreciated.

Harold Keevil found ice last night after dinner at Sealrock and Raccoon points. It may have completely gone out overnight. I am waiting for confirmation to call ice-out on Lake Temagami, our benchmark lake.

For anyone wondering, Ed headed north yesterday. He likes be the first on the water, but Tasha Mathias tells me she saw a canoe yesterday on Obabika. Sorry, Ed.
