Ed You have a good memory for someone getting along in years. As a matter of fact, my traveling companions fed me very well. We had a peaceful, hearty, pancake breakfast on the Obabika side of the portage to L. Temagami. It was a last opportunity for us weary travellers to break bread together on that trip. Even better according to some of my companions: my dad met us on the L. Temagami side, served as our water taxi and brought along the forgotten cigarettes and a flask of rum. Now that was travelling in style. If you enjoy The Cabin, read Walden. Meeting you was a highlight of the trip.

Doc: You are only as old as you feel! I am glad they fed you, because on Saturday night you looked famished after your week of tripping.(I have never tripped with your companions .... but I have heard gripping stories of their wild escapades). Also... you are too kind to me. |

Speaking of cool old airplanes. I was on Florence Lake in 1977 and two old Americans owned the cabin. They had their Grumman Mallard pulled up on the beach. The Mallard is the little brother of the Gruman Goose (and you guys thought Gruman made canoes)it's a twin engine high wing amphib, very cool. I'm amazed the cabin is still standing it didn't look much different in '77. |

bush_pilot Speaking of cool old airplanes... have you seen the old Gypsy Moths that used to Aerial Spray out of Elk Lake for the L+F? If not, might be able to round up a picture of the fleet parked at Elk Lake. (Webmeister might even like a peek at that shot, I'm thinking?) Sundown

Bushpilot...the Mallard (or a Mallard) was in this year in August. He moored on the campsite North East of the cabin. about 1/2 a mile up the lake from the cabin. The cabin is in very good condition...I forwarded Brian some full res pictures of it. A couple days work and a good cleaning would make it liveable. There is a Sept 1978 Trade a Plane on the table. My luck it's the last one they are looking for with a $10,000 reward to complete their full archive set...but I was taught not to touch other peoples stuff. Also in the cabin is still pots/pans/fishing net/ etc/ (Message edited by irishfield on September 29, 2007) |
