Hello,

I need some help in identifying some landmarks on some old 16mm home movies I currently have. The first film is color from 1951 and is titled on the reel, "Camp Chimo". Although that is self explanatory in itself - there is a church in the film that is quite old and shows some people exiting the church. (I would like to know what the name of it is and the history) most appear to be Native Indians and other folks who are either residents or tourists. Also there is a steamer that is docked at the camp being unloaded, plus other scenes of the HBC taken from offshore, etc.

I guess what I am looking for is help from a local or historian that will enable me to produce a short 30 minute video of the Temagami area with either some narration or subtitles to be added to the film. This film is currently being converted to Mini DV so it can be edited, however a free copy can be sent on DVD or VHS to the person I think would best be able to help me with this project. I have more old movies from Temagami, but I will deal with those later. One is from the early 1930's with footage of the "Y Camp", etc.

If anyone is simply interested in obtaining a copy of the footage "unedited" let me know and I will sell you a copy on DVD or VHS. The footage is very good and will certainly bring back some memories to anyone who lived at that time in the area.

Thanks!

Shawn Kelly

To Shawn Kelly,

The Teme-Augama Anishnabai hired a historian for their land claim in the 1970's. To the best of my knowledge he now lives in Haileybury, Ont. His name is Jim Morrison.

There are also some people that live on Bear Island who used to work at Camp Chimo when they were young. I know who they are, however I don't live on Bear Island anymore and I don't have their permission to give out their names.

Perhaps if you call the Temagami First Nation Administration Office (705) 237-8943, they might help you.

Another group that could be contacted is the Temagami Lakes Association and the Municipality of Temagami. They all can be accessed on the Web.

I hope that this was of benefit to you and good luck with your project.

Thanks Oshkabewis - when I get this film back from the transfer company in two weeks I will send you a complimentary copy for your kind help!

I believe this particular film is about 14 minutes long, but it is all excellent footage of a bygone era. Let me know if you want a VHS or DVD copy? Also, send me your address when you get the chance.

Kindest regards,

Shawn Kelly

How much of the film actually involves sites on Bear Island and the local Nishnabai? Is it mostly Chimo or other places?

Jim no longer lives in Haileybury. When I came back to my desk next weekend I will dig up his current contact info.

There are also several great resource folks on Chimo.

Shawn, This sounds quite interesting. I know of a priest at St. Elizabeth's parish in Temagami who used to travel to Bear Island. When? I think starting in the late 1940's. I was an altar boy for Father Moore, starting in about 1950 in
Temagami (gosh, guess that was over 50 years ago, huh?). Father Moore was one of the longest serving priests in the Temagami - Bear Island area. After he retired, he became chaplain here in Sudbury at the Sudbury General Hospital.

I believe the film owner did not return, and auctioned the film on eBay.

Thanks Purser for the info. I am still here Brian I have just been too busy to come back and check the forum. I haven't sold the film - just copies on Ebay to help pay for the hefty costs of the original transfer. I also wanted to see if there would be interest in the film and put the copies for sale on Ebay to prove whether people would be interested in this sort of footage or not. I sold 7 in one week and surprisingly only one person was from Canada as the rest were all from the US. Here is one response I received from the film: "Last night I visited my sister, who lives about an hour from me, and presented her one of the extra videos I'd purchased, but did not tell her what was on it. She slipped it into the VHS player and her jaw dropped. It took her breath away. So many memories of Chimo -- where we'd pick up our mail, etc. in the 1960's and '70's.

Great job on the quality, too! Vivid colors. We'd never seen the Belle of Temagami, although it is now featured on lots of memorabilia up there. It was a real thrill seeing it in motion. Sister Nancy was exclaiming, "Wow!
And THERE IS GOES!" as it pulled away from the dock. She said, "I wonder if Bear Island is on this". I didn't say a word and within a couple minutes she was shrieking again! So there you are. When I give brother Bill his copy I'm 'in for it' all over again -- only he's even more excitable".

I have 2 other films being converted now and will be ready shortly. I still hope to do a better diocumentary later on when time allows me, but in the meantime I will try to sell these on Ebay to help pay for more film transfers. Currently I have at least 300 films I want to transfer over to digital format and that is a lot of money. Thanks to all who have replied to my forum request for information.

Kindest regards,

Shawn Kelly

BTW, if the boat in the video is the one in the photo on eBay, it is NOT the Belle.

If you can show me the eBay route to this photo, Brian, I'd like to take a peek. It might be the AC, which, of course, is right up my alley, North Arm, even.

oh, I erred, Chimo; that's not AC territory, and that's South arm. Apologies to Lake Temagami.

Brian - I was told it was the Belle, but you are the expert here. Any idea what boat this is? I don't want to mislead anyone on it.

Thanks,

Shawn

It is the Modello. The grand Belle of Temagami was retired in 1945. The big windows in the bow were distinctive to the Modello. If you do a forum search you will find a photo of the Modello.

Thanks for the info Brian - much appreciated! I now have to make a change on my Ebay ad. BTW send me your address and I will mail you a free video if you like. Seeing you are the resident expert here - can you tell me what the name of the church is in the video? I had a picture of it on the ebay listing. Lastly, on my other Temagami film which is due back any day now - there are color pictures from the early 1940's - some of which might appeal to "bush pilot" who often posts here. The footage I am talking about is of an identifiable bush plane in the water unloading a passenger at a dock. I will post a photo of this plane as soon as I get the digital copy of the film back.

Kindest regards,

Shawn

Shawn, that's the Roman Catholic church on Bear Island. It is called St. Ursula today, but don't know if it was called that back in 1951.

Hi Shawn,
As asummer resident of island 1091 from 1928-65 I would be interested in your dvd. Perhaps some early pictures would be useful in identification.

isle1091, not sure where that is,but you might like to peruse my webpage for some old Temagami pics. Some are better than others. I was purser for a few years on the Naiad, and the Aubrey Cosens, in the late 1950's. I'd be interested in knowing any experiences you might remember about that particular time period.Oh, the website is http://temagami.cjb.net/
