I have loved all of Watersongs films. I agree that when you see the old Growth is when you appreciate it the most and fight to preserve it. That is why I guide at the Changing of the Seasons Ceremony on Obabika in September. We need to show and explain to the people what the Old Growth is and why we need to preserve it. Bill |

Thanks to everyone for their input...lots of great discussion! Appreciate both the praise and criticism...that's what I was asking for! If the film is accepted into the Waterwalker ( big if...) I may have time to make alterations prior to sending in a final copy. a) I would live to improve the section that discusses what Temagami is and where it is.... mention the Nastawgan.... native peoples ....6000 yrs of occupation b) I like the ideas presented here on: - increasing amount of old growth in Ontario - mentioning its fragility (not just to logging, but to ATV's, fire....Light and Respectful and Careful Passage and Usage - include www.ancientforest.org in the credits along with Ottertooth and Earthroots. Any other suggestions ???? Thanks for taking the time to watch it!

Watersong I suspect your film will continue to enjoy more and more success, particularly as you tweak and heighten/focus the message. I did have another thought which i should like to share... perhaps you are aware already... but there is a massive cut planned just East of Maple Mountain, a traditional Anishnabai spiritual site. The cut is not Old Growth, per se, but it is an uncommonly large clearcut, much larger than is even presently allowed under OMNR guidelines... but, they are proceeding regardless. It encompasses the entirety of Klock Township, the entirety of Van Norstrand Township, and about half of Leo Township, pretty much to the shoreline of Lady Evelyn Lake, and creating massive Sightline Destruction. If I am not mistaken, that represents approx 150 Square miles, and i would guess about 30 million trees. Those are 30 Million trees that will never be afforded the chance to become Old Growth trees. The cut is being conducted under the auspices of The Temiskaming Forestry Alliance who hold the Sustainable Forestry License for the area. Oh... the TFA estimates they will plant approx 4 Million Tree Seedlings in 2008 (while Roula and I have our own Private Initiative to plant 2 Million as Private Citizens). Yup... Nothing Wrong With This Picture, eh? Watersong, I'm not very good at posting links and such, but Brian has some information he has written on his Main Page here, and hopefully he will direct you to his Research and Articles. He's the expert on the Maple Mountain Debacle. Regards Sundown |

Watersong Just to make this perfectly clear... I go on and on like a Broken Record (Sorry Folks) that, in my opinion, the greatest threat to Old Growth Forests is the Shortsightedness of People, and the Unwillingness of Industry to NOT undertake Regeneration in a Responsible Fashion... "To Not Adopt a Policy of Regenerating Tree-for-Tree, that Which is Harvested". The TFA has dozens and dozens of clearcuts planned for 2008, not JUST Maple Mountain, yet only +/- 4 Million Seedlings will be replanted. The TFA Owns the Sustainable Forestry License... What in the name-of-the-wee-little-man is Sustainable about this? It Baffles the Mind. And, does that answer the question of why they WILL one day look to harvest the remaining Old Growth... granted the opportunity? Incidentally, Roula and I tried to meet with the TFA 2 weeks ago, and they responded that our proposed dates were regrettably inconvenient... So, we agreed to alter our plans to suit dates convenient to them, as expressed by them... Those dates, as well, became suddenly inconvenient. Stay tuned. There will be a "Sit-Down" eventually. We believe in Preservation Through Perserverance. The TFA will tell you the Forest Industry has experienced extremely difficult Financial Times recently, and that endeavouring to replant 4 Million Seedlings in 2008 is a very expensive proposition. Believe me, Roula and I are very much aware of what it is costing us to grow our 2 million seedlings. Many is the day I wish Roula and I had the right to finance our Private Initiative through Harvesting a Public Resource, as does the TFA. But, we dont have that "Luxury"... so, we will do it Our Way. RESPONSIBLY. Regards Sundown and Lilydipper

Thanks for the additional input Sundown.. all is appreciated. Good luck with your seedling project...I hope you get some press and "shame" the TFA into doing better. My question...if we are loosing money cutting down the trees... why not just leave them? |

Cutting is for profit, which may come through income generated, or through maintaining or increasing the capital value of the business. That is, and always has been, the sole purpose of a business corporation. We could get more sophisticated by discussing short-term losses and other strategies, but it all comes back to profits. |

This requires a decision made by a small group of wise people in my estimation. What it does not require is another moth-collecting government study paid for by the same beleagured taxpayers. Now, to decide, who shall those 7 wise people be?

I was excited yesterday to receive a call from the Waterwalker Film Festival to say that they are including my second film ( Canoeing Old Growth: A Visit to the Blueberry Lake Old Growth Forest, Temagami Ontario) in this year's festival. Hope you get a chance to see it ! |
