When we paddled through Mihell Lake mid May we ran across what we originally thought to be destruction of the south point of the north island. On further examination of the photos we began to think that this was a more organized cut. The trees and brush cleared & pilled and the log by the waters edge marked in flagging tape.
Could this be an emergency helicopter pad?
Has anyone else come across this cut or other similar ones in the area?

Is there any sigh of a forest fire on the island?
It does look like a temporary pad built by MNR fire crews, pretty big though. Usually the pad will be on the edge of a lake so the tail rotor can be placed over the water, a single log for the back of the skid gear to land on and other trees cleared to provide clearance for the main rotor blades. |

There was no sign of fires on the island or around the lake as far as we could see, no sign along the hillsides or down to the water's edge. |

A friend of Curly's said that it looks as if MNR dropped in a fire crew for a lightning strike on the small, narrow, central island. They "aggressively" cleared off the south tip of the island, possible for a helicopter?
That is all we know of so far. |
