The Montreal River was very high; the concrete ramp at the Beauty Lake rd. bridge is completely submerged. We paddled up to Smoothwater lake May 17th and all the ice was off the lake. Better than 1996! The lake level is up over a meter, the Kirsch campsite had no beach left and the creek from Marina Lake was rushing loudly, nice for sleeping. The next day we crossed the Apex portage;
still snow in shady areas, some very wet low areas and a paddle through by the end. |

This should dry up fairly quickly after the rains....
I spent a day up in the aurora trout lakes. Snow left on the south shore of Whitepine Lk along the cliff. The ministry hasn't opened up their station yet, the docks are still ashore. The portages to Whirligig and Little Whitepine are in good shape however the portage to Jerry Lake is all but obliterated. There are falldowns, blowdowns and a microburst across the portage leaving only small sections of trail visible. |

The front door to the station is the dock set out on Whitepine Lake, at the portage to Whirligig. This is where the planes tie up and the boats for the big lake are kept. The station is located on Whirligig Lake and is quite a modest building.
Boats are kept on Whirligig and Little Whitepine. The program seems successful, while paddling down Whitepine Lake fish would jump and splash regularly. f fishing was allowed you could have your limit in minutes.... This is a beautiful area in the high country that gets little traffic. |
