I typically spend a week at my friends island on Temagami in Ferguson Bay. This year my brother-in-law will be with me and he is big into hiking/photography. I was wondering if anybody could suggest some hiking trails to point him to. ideally i would drop him off on shore and pick him up a later time so he could do his thing. Not looking for anything overnight, just a few hours max. I am aware of the trail up to Devils Mountain, but not much more than that. Somebody said there is an old trail/road that goes from the inlet near devils mountain north from there... Any suggestions?

The old growth trails on Temagami Island were cleared in May. The Nastawgan Trails map is a useful guide (link below) until we get an updated map together. The red access trail on the nastawgan map is no longer available and the north bay access dock may not be installed just yet, but you could drop your brother off there and pick him up at the east bay dock. You could hike all the trails in about 3 hours. http://www.nastawgantrails.org/gps_tracks/images/t emagami_is.pdf |

The yellow interpretive trail description is available here: http://www.ancientforest.org/temagami.html Again, this is being updated but it is about 90% correct.Post 10 is not yet included in this description. |

Check out the Lake Temagami Atlas that Brian has put together: http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/map_tem_at las_sandy.htm There are lots of hiking opportunities on Ferguson Bay, including around Ferguson Mountain and inland to Red Squirrel Lake, north to Barmac Mountain and the Aston Ridge. Note that the Ferguson Trail is not maintained between Buffalo Mountain and Upper Kokoko Bay. You could easily follow the Roko Landing Road to Kokoko Lake or Red Squirrel. There's some very nice trails from Camp Wanapitei on either side of the river to Red Squirrel Falls. |

There will soon be trails to hike on Bear Island as well. Should be ready for hikers in a week! |
