Remains of missing Kitchener man found-Updated 0 By JENNIFER HAMILTON-MCCHARLES, The Nugget Thursday, May 28, 2015 3:49:09 EDT PM Bookmark and Share Change text size for the story Print Report an error Maureen Trask was never going to quit looking for her son. She knew the outcome wouldn't be good, but that didn't matter. She wanted his remains. She wanted to bring him home. Trask said her son's skull was found by the Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue Volunteer team Sunday near the east shore of Lady Evelyn near Walsh Lake. The remains were sent by Ontario Provincial Police to the North East Region Forensic Pathology Unit for examination and have been positively identified as Daniel Robert Trask of Kitchener. “This was what we were here to find,” Trask told The Nugget in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon from Lady Evelyn. “We suspect he fell and suffered a fracture, but the cause of death is still inconclusive.” Trask said a rib bone was found yesterday, however it's unclear if the bone is human or animal. “The bone is being sent away to be tested,” she said. “We're just guessing right now. We can only anticipate what Daniel did his last day.” Trask said the Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue are assisting the Ontario Provincial Police in the search for more of Daniel's remains and other clothing. She said the search is happening both in the water and on land. Daniel Trask was reported missing in November 2011. His car was found on Red Squirrel Road near Camp Wanapitei at Ferguson Bay after he was reported missing. At the time of his disappearance he was 28-years-old. The discovery was found during an extensive search organized by the family. Search teams arrived May 21 and were expecting to remain in the Temagami area until May 31. The Trask family also arranged for two certified cadaver dogs from the Ottawa Valley SAR Dog Association to be up there for three days. In 2013, the Michigan Backcountry Search and Rescue Volunteer team had located Daniel's backpack. It was found about five kilometers north of where his winter jacket and snow pants were found in May 2012. The Trask family have organized countless trips to Temagami to find Daniel. Daniel, who also went by Dan or Danny, spent his summers canoeing in Temagami and returned to the area for the Changing of the Seasons, a native celebration. j.hamilton-mccharles@sunmedia.ca

Although the Ottawa Valley SAR Dog Association team (Kim Cooper and Pauline Sunman with cadaver dogs Grief and Quinn) were unable to find anything prior to their return home on Sun. May 24, 2015 in the late afternoon, they were prepared to come back again. Little did they know that the day they left would be the same day the MibSAR team found the remains. Search update from the MibSAR team is below. Our sincere thanks for their tireless and professional search efforts. Without their dedication, we could not have found Daniel.

Don & Maureen... Graywulf & I spent 10 days last fall with two other good friends in Diamond/Lady Evelyn area and ALWAYS had our eyes open for signs from Daniel. Trasker is truly a brother of the north and we will keep him in our hearts forever. Our thoughts and prayers are with you from north-central Ohio. Bruther Gudwulf |

Remembering Daniel: Hard to believe a month has passed since Daniel’s Celebration on Sun. June 7, 2015. It was amazing. We were overwhelmed with joy and humbled by the love and kindness from so many people. We did it Daniel style, the way he would want to be remembered: sharing memories and stories; reminiscing over the picture show that Adam and Kelly put together with Daniel’s favourite music – difficult since he loved such a wide variety of music: pop, rock, native, nature, country, blues and reggae and Grandpa Trask’s song tape to name a few. Memory tables were setup with many of his own creations: artwork, sketches, bow and arrows, wake board, self portrait, rocks, masks, dream catcher, turtles, and lots of fishing pictures. We posted the Temagami wall maps showing with markers of our searches over the past 3 ˝ years. Food and drinks were ample, which helped add to the happy, fun atmosphere. It was so nice having the Trask and Schade families out in full force as well as our Fire family, including the on-shift firefighters showing up in their trucks to honour Daniel. Many of them had helped in our searching efforts. It was especially humbling to have Kim Cooper and Pauline Sunman from Ottawa, who were up in May with their search dogs; and Friends of Temagami: Kim and Deb Cowan., PJ Justason and Dave Hill. But, the most impactful experience was going outdoors onto the patio, seeing our red Old Town canoe that Daniel used on his trips in the Temagami backcountry, filled with his fishing pole and paddles, resting on a garden way with the Grand River in the background; lots of tables for family and friends to gather, each decorated uniquely by my sister Sharon; on a perfect sunny, peaceful day. Daniel’s presence was felt through the warm winds that afternoon. Our heartfelt thanks to all the family, friends, and even a stranger who was touched by Daniel’s story and was compelled to come and share in celebrating Daniel. We have heard from many others who have a vicarious connection with Daniel, the circle of friends continues to grow. This wonderful afternoon in honour of Daniel went far too quickly but was fun, just what Daniel would want. We are grateful for all the kindness and support from so many people. Our journey of uncertainty has ended, and we can now find peace. Daniel's Book of Memories

Dear Daniel: On this day of remembering our veterans, you too are remembered and will be forever in our hearts. This date was of significance to you and it fits the timeline, 11/11/11. So, this will be your date of death to us, bringing another meaning to this day of remembrance. Today we celebrate our cherished gift of you, our youngest son, now in a safe place, with the spirits, in Spirit Forest. We reflect on all that you have taught us in the last four years about strength, courage, hope and love. We are in awe as to how many amazing people you have connected us with. We remember your smile, your spirit, and your love. We remember the gift of you.
