Has anyone travelled the Chiniguchi Lake Road this year to the forks? I've never been in that way and I am curious what I would be getting into. Have a truck with good ground clearance. Thanks for any intel. |

Referenced on the map here as "Fork to Button" and "Fork to Chiniguchi": http://ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/heartland03c.h tm I guess there is actually only one fork in practice.

I wanted to make sure. Chiniguchi Lake Lodge uses that road and they always keep it open for at least their own trucks. |

Has anyone been on the Chiniguchi Lake Road lately? I'm planning a spring trip and have started to look at options given some limited time-off. I am considering a short loop trip up from Chiniguchi/Dougherty/Stouffer/Sturgeon River/Button. But that only works if I can put in near Chiniguchi as I won't have the time off to start from Matagamasi and the other option of paddling down the Sturgeon from Gervais Road would require a shuttle. Any input would be appreciated. |

Try contacting Sportsman's lodge at Kukagami. The owner, George R., caters to snowmobiling and ATV people. It's my guess that they use the road in question and he might know an answer, if there is one - the area is still probably in winter condition. |

The Road was passable in 2017 but you need a capable truck with good ground clearance. That little warning on the Ottertooth map is there for a reason! Some parts of the road were getting pretty rough. Watch out for ATVs. We went in the fall so the road was nice and firm, but spring conditions might be different... If you can get there, the area you are heading to is fantastic. The backdoor route in to Kettle Falls is a must if you are in the area, IMHO. Have fun! |

Greatly appreciate the insight. I have reached out to Sportsman's Lodge and will update if they can provide any information. Modus - I will look into the backdoor route to add to my potential trip....hadn't considered that addition, but sounds like it may be worth it. Thanks again and I'll update if I get any more information. |

Just wanted to provide an update: George was kind enough to get back to me and indicated that the road is gated by MNRF in April and stays gated until June 1st. He also indicated that right now, the road would be very wet and soft and likely impassable by car or truck. Obviously I will have to adjust my plans - but greatly appreciate the help and suggestions. Thanks again. |

Hello all, I just wanted to update this one. Finally made it through Chiniguchi Lake road last week. A couples of notes on that one - modus was absolutely correct, need very good ground clearance and 4x4 to get through. It is worth noting that Gervais had workers out on the road putting in culverts and doing some general maintenance - which really helped on the ride out. In speaking to the workers, they indicated that the Ministry (assume MNRF) had gotten Gervais to fix up the road. Had a quick chat with the lodge owners and they seemed pretty happy to have a bit of work done on the road. As for the trip, we ended up doing a loop up through Dougherty to the backdoor route to Kettle Falls, then followed the river down to the Pilgrim Triangle, then came out via Parsons back down to Chiniguchi. Really enjoyed the area. Last note of thanks for the ottertooth maps - they were excellent and perfectly detailed for the entire route.

Beautiful trip! Good to know someone's using Backdoor route, two months ago it was looking pretty much untraveled. I'd like to camp on Mudding one day. Did you have any difficulty on this route in low water, especially on Backdoor lake? |

eddy_turn, the route seem pretty much untraveled to us as well! Always fun to find a route that doesn't see much usage. Water levels through this section were fine, including on Backdoor. We had lunch on Mudding - spent the night at Kettle Falls. |
