I wanted to ask if anyone knew about water levels and ease of travel at the end of the S. Lady Evelyn River? I am planning a trip from Florence Lake out to Lady Evelyn Lake via the Shortcut Lake route at the end of September. |

I was just there a few days ago. Even with the high water this year, the route downstream of Whitemud is too low for travel. Though I didn't get that far, I would expect the water downstream of Jerry Creek to be navigable.
I did the trip some years ago right after breakup. Even then it was tough to paddle in some spots above Jerry Creek, so it is not a summer route. |

I should add the creek into Shortcut Lake is very do-able this year. |

Thanks Brian but I am talking about navigability of the section of the S.LER from Florence R. down to the 140 portage into Shortcut Lk. If this is not navigable the only option is to take the 345 portage into Dees Lk. then the 970 portage into LER. |

Just did that section of the SLER from Florence down to the confluence. The water was the highest I've seen in the summer, the meandering section is twice as wide as I'm used to seeing and so easier to steer through than usual... also we ran all the small rapids, didn't have to track at all. |

Thanks for the info and to the paddler who put flagging tape on the trees near the portage from S.LER into Shortcut Lk. Would have missed it otherwise. FYI the "rough trail" up to Florence Mtn lookout marked on the maps doesn't exist as far as we could determine. There is a small creek that can be followed part way if you don't mind a bit of bush whacking. Worth it for the view! |

I too looked into Florence trail - twice - it's not there. Like rainbird says: the creek bed is the place to start the uphill "walk". |

Rainbird, if that Florence trail marked on the map you are referring to is on an Ottertooth map, it is not marked as a trail but as a "climbing corridor" aka bushwhack. |

Some years ago there were reports on this forum describing a hiking trail up the mountain to the view point. I remember even seeing a snippet of Florence map showing this trail (not the corridor on the current map) - hence my attempts to find it. |

Our 80's edition of Hap Wilson's guide had a trail marked, with a description as well I believe... which we tried (very) unsuccessfully to find in 1992. We did make it up there, but it involved a gruelling zigzag climb between cliffs. On the way down we got lost and couldn't find the canoe... and it was about 90 degrees... |

In 2015 I had a GPS to assist me, which didn't make the climb any less grueling - so much for modern technology, alas. By the way, the map shows the view point at 530masl, but I think 530m is the height of Florence mountain, while the view point is slightly lower than the top. According to Google Earth I'd estimate it at under 510m. |
