Hoping to do the circuit from Matagamasi round through Chiniguchi in 2 weeks. Would anybody know about the state of the portages north from Matagamasi through Flume and Evelyn Lakes? Also, on the map the 895m portage from Laura Lake to Chiniguchi is marked as very muddy. How bad is it? Any info would be appreciated.

Be careful with the map you use - there are some known mistakes on it, the most infamous being location of portages on Gold lake, north of Donald. Canoe Atlas here on ottertooth includes all of Chiniguchi and provides best information available. The Laura lake portage has a long bog crossing with some logs thrown for support. In dry summer it's not a big deal, but in high water it could be difficult (still passable, by all accounts).

Thanks for the info. I have the Ottertooth maps and hopefully there will not be too much rain before we head up.

We travelled the Laura Portage this summer. It is getting worse every year... particularly bad this year. The old logs are long gone, now everyone seems to be making their own 'path'. All were bad.
We are looking for people to spend a week onsite making a new walkway... volunteers?
Maybe some work in early spring, before the ice goes out. Winter camping!

Challenging the beast? With pleasure, but can't do earlier than mid June. Please count me in if the project is still on by then.
