Plan on taking the kids to Maple Mountain in a week.....do I need to pay for parking at Mowats Landing? Is it a safe/secure area to park? It's been some time since I've been in the area, do I need a permit? I plan to take Hap's # 14 route, plan to start out from Mowats on the August Civic holiday and paddle for the rest of the week. Not sure how busy this area gets, will we have a hard time with sites? thanx jim |

No charge for parking at Mowat Landing. It is very safe/secure... the locals have always kept a vigilant eye open for the safety of visitors vehicles... and I know this for a fact. If you had another week, I'd direct you upstream to Makobe Lake, then downstream via the Makobe River to Elk Lake, or all the way back to Mowat. I did that run 2008 and hardly saw a soul, with takeout on the Civic weekend... you should experience a bit of traffic, but if you wish less, you have to go a bit more off the path. Still, you ought not have a problem with sites. Sundown |

Jimdiane Yes... the Tower atop Chee-Bay-Jing is accessible. If I may impose, please burn a bit of tobacco at the top as a tribute to the elders and ancestors, and six Firebrothers I lost there 30 years ago. I would appreciate it. Sundown |

I have been advised by park staff to not put my pink permit on the car. There have been problems with vandalism in the past. I believe these problems are in the past. The one time I put-in at Mowat was no problem. I'd expect things to be busy. High season, long weekend. |
