With these record highs and low snow levels, any speculation/predictions on how this will impact water levels on rivers (like Pilgrim Creek, for instance) and black flies this Spring? |

Scuffed yellowcanoe, haahaa! I wouldn't want to be creeking in September. Blackflied I would expect to be early. If the water levels drop early so should the flies? |

Anyone know whether there is a site that reports ice conditions for Temagami on a somewhat daily basis? |

I think this forum is the best source for that infomation, usually Bush Pilot and the Islanders keep us up to date. |

There used to be a webcam looking out over the bay in town on the Temagami municipal website, but that feature disappeared several years ago. The closest I've found is the North Bay webcam that looks out over Lake Nipissing from the top of City Hall. http://www.city.north-bay.on.ca/living/bay-cam/ |

Yep, thanks alscool. That's what got me started. Looks like my Solace/Pilgrim creek route might be jeopardy due to the likelihood of low water levels... sigh ... that is, unless, I start first thing in May ... agony |

First thing in May isn't going to help either if we don't get a HUGE amount of rain. Lake Temagami is missing a good 2 to 2.5 feet of water. (Message edited by irishfield on March 28, 2010) |

Was out for a flight this morning in the Pinetorch-Yorston Lake area. The larger lakes are still ice covered although it is beginning to pull off the shore in places. Creeks and rivers are mostly open but low flows for this time of the year. The snow is disappearing fast and what's left is scattered. Looks like a tough spring for canoeing on the smaller rivers and creeks in particular. Yorston Lake area

The Sturgeon looks like it has Fall water levels. The Yorston River does not look as if it will be canoeable this Spring.

Ed I'd agree and there's not a lot of water left to come once the lakes go ice free. What snow we had this winter (50 -60% of normal) hasn't really melted and run off this spring but rather has sublimated away with the higher than normal temps and low relative humidities. I took a picture of the rapids/falls at the Pilgrim drop basin on the Sturgeon but unfortunately it was badly blurred and unuseable but I've seen more water coming over it in August! Yes thanks for the shots, please keep 'em coming! Low water's not going to deter me from my Sturgeon plans this June/July. Gonna make for some boney runs and some walking though. |

Re: the Yorston Pic That is where you camp, on the gravel bars.
You just hope it doesn't rain big time in the night as you might get washed downstream ! |

and then the next morning you don't need to get dressed as this is how you travel low water.

So you went for a walk downstream. I was by there last Spring and there was a lot more water in it.Actually looked as if it might have been an interesting run. |

so....now that Pilgrim's out of the picture, anyone have a best guess for the Talking Falls/Yorston Pinetorch link area in terms of being canoeable/trackable? I still like Fireman's suggestion of coming up through here via Sturgeon, Yorston Lake, and Seagram... (Message edited by yellowcanoe on April 9, 2010) |
