Hey everyone [who reads this]: I'm just opening up some well wishes to everyones paddlin' plans now that the canoe season has started. The lakes be open, and the ground without snow; and the rivers flowin'.... perhaps we should be goin'. (Excuse the rhyming). Unfortunately I'm not going to get a chance to head up to Temegami until late August; but in the meantime I'd love to hear where some people's maps are being marked. Where are you planning on canoeing this season [Temegami or elsewhere of course}? |

My back is great. The more paddling the better it feels. So I plan to do as much as I can. Which won't be as much as I'd like, but still a couple of weeks in July. Et toi? |

I've finally solidified my Temegami paddlin' plans for this year, so I'm looking forward to a couple of things: my first solo experience; my first time paddlin anywhere far in the Temegami area; hanging out at Camp Wanapitei, seeing old pals come back from a 53-day trip in the NWT. I'm planning on paddling solo from the town to Sandy Inlet on Fergusan Bay, maybe going with the detour of Kokoko Bay/Lake/Inlet as opposed to open Lake Temegami. It's 50 km one way... do you guys think allowing myself 3 days is plenty and prudent? (As well as 3 days to get back) One question about Temegami actually: someone told me that the winds blow from the south quite often, is this the case? If so, I'm in for a nice paddle to Sandy Inlet, but a not-as-fun return trip, I guess. (Message edited by four_eyez on May 25, 2005) |

The winds in the Temagami are and on Lake Temagami will blow from the south, east, west, north and can cause the water to be rough and you maybe wind bound for one or more days. Yes the wind blows from the south in the summer bringing the warm weather from the south but no guarantee. Bill |

Brian: The Blackflies arrived in Temagami on Wednesday, May 25th. Canoebear: Yes, the NE winds are the ones to be watched out for and my new Nova Craft looks as if it has been on a canoe trip. and Hillbilly:You also are right, the winds in Temagami can blow from all directions. Sometimes from more than one direction at the same time as I have recently observed. |

Otter_Mel: I stopped by to see the new Dmitri and his pal Nimoosh, as I passed by his location, but he was not there. On the way out last Friday it was wet, blowing hard and getting late so I did not go over there to see if he had returned. Nimoosh knows Pepper and last Fall when I was in the area, Nimoosh was running through the shallows close to the beach, kicking up a huge rooster tail of water as he went along. As he got close to us he recognized Pepper and came over to our canoe to see us. Not being content with just coming alongside, he jumped right into the canoe along with the several gallons of water trapped in his fur.You begin to appreciate the strength of Nimoosh when you realize he did this feat from a standing position in over 2 feet of water without tipping or hardly even rocking my canoe. |

Canoebear: There are no bearclaw marks on my canoe, just many rock marks from Temagami's portage landings and take-outs. |

Nice to know that he hasn't left the area for more scientific pursuits. I hope to be up there in late september for the annual "do". |

Canoebear: I do have a Bob Special in Kevlar and have used it for many years. Presently, I am using a new 16'prospector in Royalex lite, about 68 pounds empty. I am not sure how durable this will be as the hull is now covered in dents and cuts. I am not overly hard on my canoes, in that I don't drag them about any more than necessary, don't go down rock strewn rapids etc. but the conditions out there can be difficult at times. I suppose, I will just use it until it gets really bad then get another one. It will be getting at least 2 more workouts in Temagami this year and a month long trip to Wabakimi in August so I should know how well it will stand up by the end of the Season. I didn't see much wildlife this trip. I think the larger creatures sense that there is a dog around and keep their distance. There were lots of wolf scats to be seen on the portages in the more remote areas that I travelled and moose droppings. But I did not see any moose. Lots of waterbirds were around, loons, several varieties of ducks, some just passing through. In general the song birds were around but fairly quiet. I think they were waiting for the warm weather to arrive before starting their mating songs and this was just starting to happen towards the end of May as the bugs began to appear. On May 11th we camped on Makobe Lake and the temperature went down to -10ºC that night. It never got over -5ºC the next day, so that cold weather which lasted for about a week slowed down Springs arrival in Temagami. Lot's of Beaver were about, slapping their tails on the water all night long and kepping Pepper awake with their loud habits. |

hey ed, While winteren, I hole-up. It takes months of hardened conditionen before I'm well seasoned to venture to far north. As soon as ice-out, I splash paddle up & down river drift flow builden firmness + sum sureness. 'Tis smooths-way to make ready fer wife & I to forge thru our wind wave Chain O' Lakes link-ups. Heres wher we move in mix of tha many-raw-sideness of tha "Lady's watery wave's wrath". Once our changed spirits R weathered & dauntless, we make ready fer portage packsack outen wher much watersmeet. Once 'tis be water wake behind us, we be up-to-tha-mark to paddle portage "Tha True NE Wilds". ed! How tha hall R U out-fitted so early-on to solo? R U sum what of an "Iron-Man"/or "Spirited Bear", Heya? |

Canoebear: I would think I am more like an old "spirited bear". I pretty much hibernate all winter and drink lots of beer. Occasionally I go out and ski and sometimes snowshoe a bit, but by the Spring I become aware of my slothful ways and feel the need to get out and do some serious physical activity. The first week of my trips are not pleasant as I grunt and groan my way over the Temagami portages, and there are many of them, but after about a week and a bit, the portaged weight is usually coming down, while the useful muscles are building strength and start to get into the swing of paddling and portaging. But as you know wilderness Canoeing is mostly a state of mind,like...running the Iron Man, except you are only competing with yourself. |
