I am looking for information on canoeing the Montreal River and neighboring lakes north, downstream, from Gowganda. Anyone with experience in this area?

Living in Gowganda full time, lots of water north of Gowganda, Burke Lake, Edith Lake and into Obushkong and North. Great walleye fishing in Obushkong, my favorite lake to fish. Down the river to Matachewan, or a tour across Sidney creek ánd south to Elk Lake, also back down to Long Point Lake through Shillington (Lake Trout)too. Bill |

Blackfly, Thanks for the information. I would like to pick your brain and benefit from your experience. I will be coming to Gowganda to start a trip about July 12. Was thinking of a casual trip to Matachewan, exploring some lakes along the way. Do you know of any maps that would indicate campsites and portages? Any suggestions for routes? |

bilhenry: The route you are looking at is described in an NMR Publication: MNR 4618, ISBN 0-7729-8186-8 It was published by the Kirkland Lake District and copies may still be available. If not, then we would have to try to get someone with a large scanner to scan and print or email the copy I have for you and that may be complicated. Please check with the MNR asap in Kirkland Lake as I will be away for most of the summer starting about July 7th.. There is no written route description, but the route map generally shows the location of dams, portages, lengths, campsites etc. for the canoed area North of 560 running from Elk lake through Gowganda and a bit west to West Montreal river. It has been at least 15 years or more since I did that trip with 2 of my children, so I don't remember too many details, except that there were lots of cottages on parts of some of the lakes, especially Mistinikon. There should be others who have copies of this publication and if I can't help you, then try posting on myccr.com where some other canoeists hang out. |

Had to reduce these by quite a bit as our dialup lags a bit at 24.0 Kbps. Hope they are Ok, if you need hard copy I will need an address. |
