Just returned. Interesting week. A lot of strange weather. I arrived at Obabika on Monday, not a scrap of garbage anywhere, sweat lodge ready to go, so.... and then slept in it, as well. Which was good because a major storm struck in the night and pinned me down until Wednesday morning. Made a fire at the main campsite and cooked a nice dinner. Met many people, a few stragglers from the COSG. On wakimika, a huge group of waldorf school children from Northern Michigan and not far behind a group of school kids from Toronto. They were in for some miserable weather. the rain started on Thursday and never really stopped. It was still raining today when I pulled out. The puddles on the Wanipatei public parking access road were so deep I was worried I would get bogged down. Water so deep my doors were half submerged. No idea how the Volvo Station wagon was going to make it out. Met the Wanapetei Trent University Outdoor Group hiking Mount Napoleon. Winds from every point on the compass. warm south winds on Friday. water levels came up one foot at least over night. Camped at Center Falls and had a small river wash out my bedroom. tough get a hot fire going, thank goodness I am a pyromaniac. A little stove fuel does wonders on a rainy day. I keep seeing people with 42 pound canoes!!! Am I a fool for dragging an ABS boat through Temagami??? I do not understand how those boats survive. I guess you go more slowly. We are of the "single carry/keep moving forward" school. then again, I notice I have half the gear most people have. To say nothing on the people I bump into wearing a pair of crocs, doing all the portages down the North and South Channels of the Lady Evelyn River!!!
OK, off again Thursday to Killarney, pray for sunshine.

Fireman:
When you were on the beach at Pine Point, I was camped further south on Fry Point on the west side of the lake experiencing the same weather on Tuesday. I could see you through my binoculars.I decided to cut my sojourn short and leave on Wednesday, prior to the big rainfall....

Hey Ed, welcome back. I saw some movement down there, no binoculars though. It was quite the rolling thunder review, was it not??
Wednesday was a glorious day and everything after that rather soggy. Nothing we are not used to, though. Once again, the cleanliness of the campsite after the gathering really impressed me. I found a popcan tab and a bread tie and that was it. there seemed to be a fair bit of motion over at Alex's during the day on Monday and I saw a boat moving when I left on Wednesday.
I think next year will be the year I join the gathering. If only to use that beautiful sweat lodge again. Cheers.
heading out Thursday for Killarney with four girls and two boys, all 17. Forecast calls for no rain...for now. busy dehydrating and thinking of new things to do with rice.

Yes it was a rather wet Tuesday. Most of the day was overcast, but the Thunder Storm stuff came back by mid afternoon, making for a wet sit by the fire.... first all day fire I have had for years.

Pine Point was surprisingly clean this year.I suspect that it is occupied just about every day during the period from late June through into early September.

We did a sweep of it on Sunday morning to pick up any garbage that might have been dropped during the ceremony and very little was evident.
I expect others camped there overnight, beat us to the most choice, most obvious pickings.
