Does anyone know of an established trail to reach the fire tower from Pinetorch Lake? Friends and I have tried twice to get there by bushwacking our way, but we were unsuccessful each time. (Probably because we started too late in the day!) There is an old trail located east of the campsite on Pinetorch which we used as a starting point. We then headed northwards to where we thought the general location would be (according to our compass). In any event, we had a terrific view of the lake and surrounding area. |

There is no established trail to the tower. The original trail went from the towerman's cabin at the east end of Pinetorch. A clear-cut in the late 70s or early 80s destroyed the lower portion of the trail. Sometime in the early 80s, Hap Wilson flagged a new trail from the campsite, but never cut it. What you found was the remains of the lower portion of the intended trail. This is the best way to go, overland from the campsite as there is less underbrush than where the loggers went through and is still an old forest. Here's a map that shows the ideal route (dashed green) that Hap flagged: http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/Misabi-Ran ge.htm
