if you are used to long portages over steep slippery rocks its a nice 5 days from sucker gut to willow island. if not you should avoid it because it's dangerous!! i saw a guy once being carried out with a broken leg.
there are a bunch of beautiful waterfalls on this route which is why it's called the "golden staircase". |

Although there are others here with more experience I will put in my 2 cents worth on the north channel
We flew in to McPherson Lake (3 of us)and started down the north channel. The first day was awful as we had heavy packs (Don't carry cans!!). The portages are very rough and lining is tricky because of the uneven rocks under the surface. Made it as far as Helen Falls the first day. Second day made it out to Sucker Gut/Hobart.
