Hi all, I'd appreciate some advice on my first solo trip. About me: I'm a very experienced tripper including whitewater (Sturgeon ages ago, Dumoine, Coulonge, Noire, Winisk...) and a young guy, so I expect to travel reasonably quickly, but not push too hard. Here's two possible plans: [1] shuttle put in Matagamasi, 1st night Matagamasi (if late start) or Paradise lagoon 2nd night McConnell Bay through Laundry--Rathwell--Marjorie 3rd night Upper Goose falls through Rawson crossover Alternate: up through Adelaide to Pilgrim Triangle. 4th night Wawiagama or south Obabika L 5th night Temagami (basically extra day if Obabika is windy), out in T-town. *** [2] Here's a fleshed-out alternate with the "backdoor route": First night Wolf Second night Dougherty (coming up through Marjorie) Third night Sturgeon (Kettle falls or below) Fourth night Sturgeon (Upper goose possible?) Fifth night Wawiagama / Obabika Sixth night Temagami, in T-town. I'd appreciate any input, especially about soloing the Sturgeon and the Northern tracks. I'm reasonably flexible on trip length. Cheers, GR |

I think you are a bit optimistic with travel distances. (1) To go from lower Obabika to Temagami town in 1 day is quite far unless you are using a kayak. From Wolf Lake to McConnell via Marjorie is ~ 7 portages. Why do that when you need only 2 to get to the north end of Chiniguchi via the route through Dewdney? (2) You will be hustling to go from Wolf to Doughterty in 1 day via Marjorie. How many carries? 1 carry per portage? That may be possible. In Late August? Or September when it gets dark by 7PM? And again Obabika to the Town of Temagami in 1 day? Pretty hard ... I think. |

Thanks for the reply, Ed. I maybe wasn't clear enough on the "in" days. It would be 4th night camp on Wawiagama or Obabika, 5th night camp on Temagami, in on the 6th day. (or 7th for alternate route.) Cheers, GR |

Oh, and the timeframe is late August, and I thought Marjorie would be fun and less crowded. |

For a reference: I was from Matagamasi to McConnell bay through Wolf and Dewdney mid July and haven't seen a soul except for a group of kids on a beach site in McConnell. All together in 9 days paddling Chiniguchi and Sturgeon I saw 4 canoe parties. |

gravity... that sounds more reasonable. From Lower Obabika to the Town of Temagami is getting close to ~ 50 kliks, and the wind doesn't always co-operate....

Ed, yeah, I've had some long days -- one might even have been 50k, but downwind with a storm on our heels -- it wasn't my idea of fun! Thanks for the info eddy_turn. Is this reasonable, then: First night Wolf Second night Dougherty (the paddling way) Third night Sturgeon (Kettle falls through the "backdoor route" if weather, etc. is going well, otherwise through Stouffer) Fourth night Sturgeon (Upper goose possible?) Fifth night Wawiagama / Obabika Sixth night Temagami, in T-town on day 7. |

Take the Stouffer Crossover. The BackDoor route is a slog. I did it last year in the rain and it took some time. Most people suggest camping partway. Stouffer is an easy portage. I am not clear on how people go from the Sturgeon to Wawiagama? do you paddle up Wawiagama Creek? In fall? I have taken out at the old lumber camp and done the long portage on the logging road. It is a long haul but obvious. From Obabika to Temagami is a long grind. |

From the Sturgeon, below Upper Goose, paddle to the Obabika River (~1/2hour) then upstream on Obabika River to Wawiagama Creek (~4 hours) then the Wawiagama Creek to Wawiagama Lake (~1hour). Shallow in the Fall, but useable with some pullovers and maybe the odd wade. |
