The Red Sq cabin Ed mentions is on the N side of the River mouth across from the start of the portage. It appears to be a trappers shack, in poor repair, but evidently used seasonally for trapping purposes. |

I beleive the Red Squirrel cabin in question belongs to a Bear Island resident, therefore, it may not neccessarily be on MNR's list of LUPs. It is not in great condition, and I don't recall there is a stove in it anymore... but it is worth checking out. Given their track record of recording other values that exist on the land in Temagami, I wouldn't put much faith in MNR's inventory of cabins and LUPs... The real knowledge of the land exists within these forums, with those of us who regularly travel in the Temagami wilderness. (Message edited by micmac on November 23, 2011) |

There is a very large hunt camp put up annually in an old logging clearing just off the Red Squirrel Road near Whitefish Bay and before the Aston River. I have been told it belongs to a Bear Island clan (Mackenzie's?). They presumably travel the road and surrounding area, so if Dan went that way there is a possibility they may have seen him. I mentioned this to the OPP, and they were going to stop by the camp yesterday. It might be worthwhile talking to all those who have used the camp this fall directly. |

I guess we must assume that he had no communication device of any kind with him (Spot, PLB of a Cell phone). The weather is getting colder. Have all old logging roads and portages been checked? Tracking dogs used yet?? |

Grasping at a straw here, but Kim's post on Nov 16 indicated that Dan had taken NO gear with him. Has it been determined just what he actually MAY have with him, IE/what items may not be accounted for in the place or places where he normally stores his tripping gear? That might provide a possible clue as to what/where he was headed, and or perhaps how long and what he had prepared for. From the various posts, He sounds to be a very self reliant, trip wise, young man whom I would expect to have well planned things out. I keep feeling that he is going to arrive back where he left his car on the Red Sq Rd scratching his head wondering now were the heck did I park! |

Hello to all of my friends. A special hello to Maureen and Don, my heart goes out to you right now, waiting and wondering must be excruciating. And lastly, a very special hello to Dan - I suspect you'll be reading this thread before long. I had the pleasure of meeting Dan at COS this year. He set up camp beside us on Alex's beach and hung out there for the Sun/Mon. I grilled the poor guy because I found him so fascinating. Dan spent much of his summer out in Temagami and from all he said, nothing was insurmountable. He is very resourceful, you would need to be, to be out there alone for months - even showed me arrowheads he had made himself. Showed me all the latest "toys" he bought for his tripping - a first class traveler. That's what gives me the greatest hope Dan is doing what he loves out there, even now while everyone is searching for him. Dan is a high-maintenance adventurer. We watched him pack up to leave and he had 4 large backpacks, most of us get away with 1 - not Dan. We could smell breakfast coming from his tent, yes he cooks in his tent. He carried so much food, he left a large amount of produce in the lake along the beach before he left. The seagulls enjoyed all of it! So my belief is this winter trip was pre-planned. At some point over the summer, he found an awesome cave to live in for some winter action. I think a cabin would be too "civilized" for him. He left a large portion of his gear there when he went home on Oct. 3rd and returned there with more provisions in tow (ie. food) when he returned on Nov. 3rd. I don't believe for a minute, this seasoned, smart, adventurous guy went out there with nothing, as mentioned previously in this thread. He is fully stocked, making arrowheads, hunting, etc. and looking up at the sky daily with the thought, "Wonder what the helicopters are looking for?". I told Dan within minutes of meeting him that he reminded me of the guy from the movie "Into The Wild" (if you haven't seen it, good movie and true story). The only difference was there was a lot more snow in Alaska than you find in Temagami in the summer. Now he's living the Alaskan dream... Dan also mentioned restocking his food twice over the summer while out there, via his canoe. Have the local merchants been questioned? I'm sure we'll see Dan when he's in need of more produce, fresh bread, etc. For Maureen and Dons' sake, I hope it happens sooner than later but in the meantime please know that my thoughts are with you. Dan is a truly amazing guy. If I remember anything else that might be useful from my conversations with Dan, I'll be back... Marina.

Update: WOW, so many great leads coming up, you are definitely keeping the OPP busy. My husband is back in Temagami today again and has some GOOD NEWS - a worker in the grocery store recalls seeing Daniel and confirms that he bought some groceries; this lead is being checked further and a relief to know he has food with him. All those prayers and hopeful thoughts are helping. amimawood: Special thanks for checking out the cabin today and to your wife for keeping us updated, one more spot we can eliminate from the list of leads. otter_mel: OPP have had search dogs out, twice I believe, nothing found. marina: Your post is very insightful. It's true he is a survivor and can handle himself well in the bush. However, we do not know how well equipped he is and the winter is a new venture for him, although we knew he was planning to go up in the winter. groggins: Here's some details on what he may or may not have: My husband was up last week helping with the search, Daniel's car only had his roofing stuff in the trunk, but possible he had some other things. When he came home on Oct. 3rd he unpacked, most of his things are still here. We have checked the house extensively; items found missing were Daniel's snow pants (lime green, how could anyone miss seeing them), snow shoes, possibly snow boots or snow boarding boots, a blue and white winter jacket (in earlier photos posted), a white hoody and possibly a black backpack. Left here, are his maps, compasses, axe, bow and arrows (yes, he made them), knives, dishes, journal book, emergency kit, flashlights, packs, sleeping bags, fishing gear, etc. He has no communication devices with him that we know of, and we have found noone that he has contacted. He has mentioned to us that he wants to leave as little a footprint as possible in his journeys. We know he was planning a trip to Temagami in the winter, though we did not expect him to leave this soon and without taking his provisions with him. Tomorrow is another day of hope. We have continued hope for finding our son safe and sound - he's out there somewhere in Temagami's beauty and allure. |

Maureen and Don: You're very welcome. My husband just wanted to do his part in trying to help find Daniel. We are so happy to hear he was seen buying groceries at some point. Our thoughts and prayers are with you first and foremost and with everyone who is out there searching for him. Ed: My husband was glad to help in this small way and wishes, like everyone, that he could do more. |

Trasker"- More grasping at a straw. When you say roofing stuff, are you meaning canoe roof racks and if that be so would he possibly then have taken a canoe with him? If so, that could be the reason he parked near Camp Wanipitae using Sandy Inlet as his put in, otherwise if he had hiked the Red Sq Rd past the gate, say onward towards Bob Lake, I would have expected that he would have parked at the gate in the small parking area that is often used for that purpose. Marina's post was encouraging. It sounds like pre planning may have Dan equipped and provisioned for whatever adventure he is on, and he does have some winter gear with him.! He may be back looking for his car before we know it. I sincerely Pray that be the case. |

Groggins: OK to grasp at straws, the roofing stuff is what he used on the job as a roofer, typically carried in his trunk. Although we have a canoe that he used in the summer, he did not take it with him. We don't know why he parked there or where he could have gone from that point (Nov. 3rd). To the best of our knowledge, the only person who saw or spoke with him was the grocery store clerk in town, this is a good lead, noone else has come forward with info of seeing or talking with him. |

Update: Today was very encouraging, the clerk in the grocery store shared that Daniel said he was going into the bush for 1 month. This is very uplifting for us, 3 weeks down. It was a busy day: a 35 mile grid search was conducted today in the area where we believe Daniel is. In addition to the OPP, we were very fortunate to have the assistance of 2 individuals who came forward to volunteer their time and skills to find Daniel: a very experienced wilderness tripper and guide, along with a well known wilderness search dog trainer with his dog, which we truly appreciate. Daniel is still missing, but we are more confident he is out there, with some provisions to sustain himself. Depending on weather, a few more spots are to be checked out tomorrow, based on leads given. We can rest a little more easy tonight. |

Update: Don and his brother arrived back home this afternoon. We have not from the OPP regarding search efforts today, can only assume no news is good news. I forgot last night to thank Jeff and Camp Wanapitei for all their help too. I'm feeling some strong maternal pains this evening, even after promising myself I wouldn't go there. But through the kindness of everyone concerned, there is hope, the expectation and desire of a positive outcome. We need to remind ourselves this is Daniel's journey. He is learning as well as teaching us a lesson in life, be strong.

It great to hear that there is stronger hope that Daniel will show up from his month long adventure safe and sound. I too think he's been looking up at the helicopters wondering what they are doing. I hope a note was left on his vehicle so that Daniel can contact others to inform us of his safe return. We anxiously await. (Message edited by bob_s on November 25, 2011) |

Update: For bob_s: Yes, notes have been left in his car and other spots searched when Daniel's dad was up there, assisting the search. For temagamifriends: We haven't heard of Bear Den Camp, but perhaps others have? For all ottertooth friends: We spoke with the OPP, confirming the chopper was out checking the specific areas identified, but no sign of Daniel. We are thankful for these search efforts, and continue to pray that he is safe. |
