Our party of 4 is considering doing the Macpherson Lake to Feguson Bay route via Lady Evelyn North Channel, Diamond Lake, Obakika etc. We are experienced backpackers ( novice/intermediate flatwater canoeists ) looking for a new wilderness experience. We are relatively fit & have good back country skills. We plan to do this mid-September. Looking for advice/information on best way to arrange renting canoes & the bush plane pick-up. Also, is this a trip that is practical with limited wilderness canoeing experise? We want to do this in 6-7 days with a little time for hiking the old growth forest.

You could rent at Temagami Outfitting, located next door to the Lakeland Airways, and then paddle back to town. Or if you prefer to minimize travel on Lake Temagami, you could drive to Sandy Inlet and have Lakeland pick you up there. Or fly from Lakeland's base, paddle back to Sandy Inlet and have Temagami Outfitting shuttle you back to your cars in town.

Thanks Brian. We were also wondering if there is any concern about water levels in mid-Sept. for our proposed route. Our group is used to the marked trails/portages typical of Killarney & Alqonquin parks and expect somewhat less visible signage on Temagami routes. Are the portages fairly well marked on the river section of our proposed route ? Just want to get a feel for what kind of trouble we could get into if we miss or shoot by a portage sign especially in the Helen Falls...Centre Falls area. Thanks,Duke.

You can't miss the portage at Helen Falls because you will see the start of rapids and rocks where you can't continue anyway. At Centre Falls, the portage starts well before the falls and it's not difficult to find (I don't know it the portage signs are up or not in the North Channel)

Thanks for the info. otter_mel. Our group may seem overly cautious in preparing for our first Temagami trip but we are trying to avoid providing the wifes with our life insurance funds prematurely and/or being nominated for a Darwin award in the process.
