I am very familiar with Cobalt and Devil Rock. I rock climb there all the time and have explored many mining shafts,

Cobalt has many exposed tunnels but it is much colder in the tunnels than it is outside. Cobalt is extremely hazardous.

The tunnels at Devil rock are not exposed at this time. A lot of climbing equipment would be needed to access the underground.

The car on red squirrel and devil rock are very far apart.

There are also old mine shafts near Bergeron Lake on the Maple Mountain loop and they are not readily apparent and one can fall into them without being aware they are there before it's too late, but I don't think he would be that far.

Re. Lindsay Cote's cabin, call Heffy at Wanapitei. He can walk there in about a half hour. If Heffy can't, let me know and I'll see if I can.

Update: Daniel is missing 6 weeks today.

Good info:
terry1234: thks for the background, Devil Rock was a long shot
otter_mel: Maple Mtn would not be out of range for Daniel; if anyone goes there, keep eyes open
curly, we've contacting Heffy about the cabin.
Harold K: I've passed on your info about the hill north west of the area where his car was found, and relatively accessible from there, near the gate on the Red Squirrel road. I've included the photo for others, it is beautiful.

Graham, MNR did some ground searching yesterday, but no signs of Daniel.

We spoke with the OPP Search Coordinator today, with the warmer weather, little snow and minimal freeze up on the waters, another air search will not occur until early in the new year. Although feeling helpless, we understand why we must wait until conditions are best for a flyover. The waiting is the worst, praying he is not in danger or injured.

If you or anyone you know will be in the Temagami area over the holdays, please ask them to keep an eye out for Daniel.

Trasker, that photo was posted by someone else on Facebook in mid-October. It occurred to me that it might have intrigued Daniel as it did others at the time. I recall the description given was northwest of Ferguson Bay, which wouldn't have been too far from where he left his car.
There is a hill visible in the distance from the road near the gate. I don't know if it's the same one, but it too beckons the adventuresome.

indeed, this is the hill to the northwest from the bay,(the view on the photo is facing east). As a possible spot for a hideout it is doubtful, there is no water source at the top of the hill

shutter_speed, we call that the Aston Ridge (between the Eagle River and Aston Lake). There's some great views to the east there, some great bushwhacking. Seclude lakes high on the ridge, no trails (but a few bush roads up the western flank). Dimitri knows that area as well as anyone.

My feeling is still be that Dan was headed west. He probably passed Sharp Rock Portage, but beyond that god only knows.

Update:
curly, Heffy has checked Cote's cabin area, no signs of Daniel. As far as the other hill spot/photo mentioned above, if there's no water close by, he likely won't be there.

We came across a map Daniel had from the summer with marking on it. Further info given is: I believe that the Ko-ko-ko- S. area has not been checked. There is also a lake off Ko-ko-ko- it is called Chambers lake which has an island with 5 or 6 cabins which is never locked.
As far as Mani-doo M. there is people near by and would know if anybody was there.

If anyone has contacts for these areas, please let us know or advise the OPP, thanks again for all the help, every possible lead matters.

Long shot! Assessable by walking down the old rd towards KoKoKo Lk and taking a right at the "Old Mine Rd" is Coppersand Lk where there used to be a small cabin overlooking the Copper mine(40 years ago). That is also not too far from Camp Wanipitae/Sandy Inlet and just a tad North of KoKoKo Lk. I've no idea whether the cabin is still standing.

http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/map_tem_at las_ferg.htm

Coppersand Lk is also searchable via Google Earth

Update: Words of encouragement from friends of Daniel's and now ours:

"Wishing you to keep your strength and hope, and miracles do happen, we need a very certain one now."

"Stay strong and I believe things will end up the way it is meant to be."

Update: Missed a couple of days, good news, see Freeze-up: December 29 as per Ottertooth posting.
Snow is accumulating, hopefully flyover next week by OPP.

Tues. was spent with family and friends.
Wed. was our 32nd Anniversary, but not feeling much like celebrating, until we know Daniel is safe, healthy and happy.

Update: Happy 2012 everyone, the new year is here, with snow and freezing waterways! Hoping OPP will be able to do a flyover later this week.

A friend said it best for the new year: "May 2012 unfold with love, happiness, peace and wonderful happenings..."

Our wish for Daniel remains the same: "Happy, Healthy and Safe, that's our neverending wish for you."

Update: In checking some notes of Daniel's, I came across "Beauty Lake" Temagami. I tracked down the youtube creator, who shared: Here is a link on Ottertooth that references the Beauty Lake access road: http://www.ottertooth.com/discus/messages/3/13325. html

I'm sure that if you posted on Ottertooth, others could provide more info.

Is this an area Daniel could be seeking out on his journey?

If one was going to check out the Beauty Lake area
(sometimes known as Isabel lk)one would more likely do so by driving South to the area via the Beauty Lake Road off of Hwy 65 near Long Point Lodge rather than parking at Sandy Inlet where Daniel's car was parked. There are a few cabins on Beauty Lake's North end. The Beauty Lk Rd also provides water access to Smoothwater lake by turning West at the Forks and putting in at the River, then South through Lady Dufferin.
Elsewhere in this thread there was mention made of the cave near Smoothwater. I spent a futile 9 days in 1972 looking for it, to no avail.

I own the white cabin on the point on Beauty lake. After October not many are back there until ice fishing. There are definitely a few cabins there. I live in the US but I can reach out to some of the other cabin owners on Beauty? Let me know how I can help.

Update: Thanks for the info provided.

groggins - Glad to hear Daniel is not the only one searching for caves in the area. Parking his car on Red Squirrel Rd would have been the most familiar to him. Not knowing if he had a plan, we are just looking for possible connections to where he may be or where he may have planned to be.

rootbrian - Yes, please reach out to whoever you can, the more people who know about him, the more opportunity for someone seeing him to let us know he is safe and OK. There is a flyer posted on the Temagami forum front page, feel free to share, all help is appreciated.
