I was just wondering if anyone knows of someone who has run centre falls and yes by that I actually mean run the waterfall itself. Thanks hope to hear back |

not a lot of water at the foot of the falls. check out the "ripley's believe-it-or-not" museum in niagara falls for a suitable craft! |

Kevin, I think you refer to an incident at Obabika Falls |

I don't think you'd want to run any of those 3 (unless you're Charles Bronson)!! |

we've all seen video of kayakers running huge falls in the himalayas, etc. but it seems like there is always an incredible volume of flow and very deep pools at the bottom. now i have swum up to the base of most of these falls (admittedly in summer) and there generally isn't a lot of depth there. i would highly recommend a "bathing suit scout" of the foot of any of these falls before entertaining any ideas of running them, even in the spring. i have no doubt you would do this anyway, i'm just sayin'... |

yeah centre is the only one that seems manageable. I am going to do an appropriate scout of the area regardless. Take a swim, inspect depth and all that jazz. It would just involve a rather large boof off the fall. |

and by the sounds of it. If i deem it safe to run and run the falls down this would be a first descent. |

i think that's a safe bet! i guess if anyone has ever gone over accidentally someone would know about it on this forum. the obabika incident alluded to above is a rarity (as i recall 2 guys missed the portage and went over in an open canoe, both survived but with more or less severe injuries- someone will correct me if i'm wrong but obabika falls is about half the height of centre falls, with about the same flow). anyway stay safe, dude- and i mean that sincerely! |

Certainly there's easier ways to end up in a body cast while being much closer to a medical facility! Bushpilot.. may as well prime that kerosene burner now! |

In all seriousness, there are kayakers who run such falls, and some much more difficult. I've never done this, but have looked at all the falls and can't think of one which would be considered un-runnable by extreme kayakers. A buddy of mine, an elite-level Canadian freestyle kayaker, once inquired about me helping with a "first descent" of the LER, but nothing panned out. I've got a message in to him to see if he knows of anyone who has run the LER. |

I find this type of adrenaline junkie jingoism a bit out of the realm of what Temagami is about. Should we hang glide off of Maple Mountain, if we can? Does it all have to be about "seeing if it is possible/" And, on a practical note, whoever does this type of stuff should be prepared to shoulder the financial burden of medevac. Someone out there tripping and falling by accident is one thing, but this is courting danger. There is no way one can rationalize going over Center Falls as "safe". And I too have seen the videos of extreme kayaking. Shouldn't a little humility be present when we are guests on the river? My 2 cents. |

Extreme sports aren't my thing either, but I think the more people enjoying Temagami in a non-consumptive way, the better. And there's plenty of folks in every activity who head out ill-prepared. Most people who engage in high-risk activities are prepared to handle it when things go wrong. The "weekend-warrior" who finds himself in over his head accounts for more SAR resources per user day than the extreme types. |

I have spent most of my summers during my childhood in the temagami area. It was just a thought and more than anything I just wanted to see if someone had run it. I believe that the Temagami area is a sacred place and I deeply respect the land. That being said I will in no way run any of this |

I in no way wanted to offend anyone and understood the possible dangers. But thanks for all of the opinions |

BTW, heard from my steep creek kayaking buddy. He's not aware of anyone paddling the falls on the Lady Evelyn. |

hey, i don't think anyone's offended at all, they just don't want to encourage you and have it on their conscience if you get hurt! i know i feel that way. i have no idea myself if those falls are runnable for guys like you or how big the risk is, however i don't think the river gods would have a problem with what you're contemplating, in my experience they are pretty down-to-earth and are willing to take whatever you can throw at them, possibly for a price...

well said and thanks for the advice. Safety is always first and nothing is truly safe. But I will just simply return this summer and see the waterfalls on the Lady Evelyn for what they are truly known for, their beauty. |
