I am planning a trip to scarecrow lake ... paddling in from the North ... in someone's expert opinion ... should I attempt to come in via scarecrow creek ? How are the water levels to date in this area? |

I would only travel Scarecrow Creek in the early spring when water levels are at their highest. |

Yes, water levels are frighteningly low. Presumably you are doing a back-and-forth from the Montreal River bridge. If so, the only place you need be concerned about water is the section Ed described. Don't take the portage into Whitemud. Many folks take the wrong portage out of Apex and end up getting back on course via the second portage (out of the bottom of Whitemud) back to Scarecrow Creek. I only mention this because the second portage will be tough to get near in this low water. http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/heartland0 6.htm

Thanks ... Yes the plan is to paddle from the Montreal R. , Beauty L. Rd put in and back .... I'm thinking ... The 1st day put in by 2ish and camp on the beach in Smooth Water L. Day 2 ... an early start - Paddle and portage all the way into Scarecrow. What kind of shape are the 1100 m and 1200 m portages ? |

All the portages south of Smoothwater are in great shape as they were once part of the groomed snowmobile network, which went through the park to the Gervais Road, and get lots of use by canoeists. |
