We're heading to Temagami for a family canoe trip Aug 14-21, but have not hammered out route details yet. Was looking for recommendations. I thought we'd start out at Sandy Inlet, but am not set on that. Note: we're two experienced adults with two girls: 7 and 3...and a dog. This is our third annual backcountry trip, and are not adverse to portage. We like to set up camp for a couple of nights at a time before moving on to our next site. Day hikes and side trips to waterfalls and other view would certainly add to our enjoyment of the route. |

Sandy Inlet to Centre Falls on the Lady Evelyn River would work. Or just wander aimlessly from your put in to the Diamond/Lady Evelyn area and back. |

you could go sharp rock-diamond-bob-obabika (old growth trails, beach campsites)-back to sandy inlet via obabika inlet. from mowat landing you could go to maple mountain via lady evelyn lake, sugar lake, lady evelyn lake, sucker gut, then back via the north part of lady evelyn lake. |

thanks Curly and GreenCanoe. We're liking the idea of: Sandy Inlet to Diamond to Wakimika Lake to Wakimika River (south) into Obabika Lake to Obabika inlet portage to Devil Bay then back to Sandy Inlet. But I'm curious about the Wakimika River south into Obabika Lake; is that paddleable? it looks like a very flat stretch of terrain, and I wonder if it would be a miserable portage through swamp during low water. Any thoughts? Any thoughts about the rest of the course? Are those nice beach campsites that you mentioned, GreenCanoe, also on this route? Curious. |

hey doster, now i think about it, the campsite i had in mind (sandy beach) is at the north end of wakimika, not on obabika. however there are sand beaches on the west side of obabika but i'm not certain there are campsites there... maybe someone else can help with that. as for the wakimika river, you won't have any problems even in low water, it's deep. i think there may be a few log liftovers, nothing serious. |

As far as sand beaches on the north part of Obabika....there are 2 sites at "Ranger Point" on the east shoreline (about 4 km after you pop out of the Wakimika River heading southeast). If you find them already occupied there is a beautiful island site directly across from it (no sand beach but great swimming area). There is also a sandy bay near the Old Growth Trails in top northeast corner of Obabika. |

Hi doster. Great idea to take the kids on such a wonderful experience. I am thinking that they would find the long paddle from the Obabika portage to Sandy Inlet arduous and tiring. They might rather like to play on Obabika, hike in the old growth, fish in the rivers and swim at the beautiful sheltered beach on Fry Point on the northwest side of Obabika.(photo attached) There are also wonderful beaches with very gradual drop offs near the centre of the lake.A very unusual feature of a moving sand bar is at the narrows near the portage. I don't think 'counting kms' is going to interest them very much.Good luck making life time memories with your daughters.

FYI....Wakimika River is a beautiful, leisurely paddle. In '09 we had only one carry over going north over a beaver dam....coming back south, we were able to run the dam with the current. |
