Hi Folks,

I have been tripping in the Temagami region for about 17 years and have ALWAYS started my trips from the main access road off HWY 11. Surprisingly, I have repeated the same 4 or 5 routes over that time period

I will be doing a trip with 5 other able trippers from July 1 to 5 and was wondering if there was another access route to begin the Diamond - Obabika loop, or for that matter, another 4 day/100km trip that is less travelled that we could undertake.

I would be most appreciative of any advice or thoughts anyone might have,

Looking forward to a great summer.
Erik

For alternative access for that route you might want to consider the bottom of Obabika or Sandy Inlet. Here's the Ottertooth maps:

Hi all, since we are on the subject of alternative/remote access points, I was wondering about vehicle safety. We are planning on using the Obabika access in June and are concerned about damage to our vehicles. I know there are no guarantees but are these access points relatively safe in regards to vehicle damage. Thanks

Vandalism and theft is a real possibility, but how likely? There have been specific locations over the years that were hit. I remember intermittent problems at Sandy Inlet and even the end of the Mine Road in the 1970s and 1980s, though both have improved dramatically in recent years.

I haven't heard of any problems with vehicles at Obabika, but maybe someone else has. And even if you hear of a problem, does that make it likely it will occur again? Suffice to say, people are parking all over the region and problems are rare.

You are way more likely to damage your car on the roads.

Thanks for the response Brian.

Seeing as the cars we will be driving up in are a Ford escort, Honda Civic and '92 Jetta, the Obabika access seems out of the question. I am unclear where the acces is for Sandy inlet on the Map. Is it off of Red Squirrel Road?

Erik, yes the access is off the Red Squirrel Road next to the Sand Flats where the P's are. I would not assume that the road conditions between the Obabika and Sandy Inlet accesses is much different. I haven't been down the Red Squirrel or to Obabika this spring, but both can be rough. Maybe someone who has been on them recently can tell you.

Erik,
I have not been on either this year 2004, but in 2003 I was on the Red Squirrel Rd. and compared to the 805 and the Goulard Rd. in 2002 they are about the same. The road from,or path from the Red Squirrel Rd. and andy inlet in 2003 was wose than the 805 and the Goulard Rd. but to Sandy Inlet from the Red Squirrel is vey short but could be very rough and wet.

Speaking of the Red Squirrel Rd, does anyone know if we will be dodging logging trucks on our way in to Sandy Inlet during June and July, or are they done cutting back of Eagle for the season?

You won't be dodging logging trucks anywhere in the Temagami unit as long as the EA bump-up request is still alive.

You could always start on Red Squirl and do the Jackpine-Cambers trip. It's always a fun one.}

I was on Red Squirrel Road the week-end before the May 24 week-end and it was in pretty good condition. Drove my Hyundai Elantra right up to Wanapitei and came back with the exhaust system still intact.

Dave,
We talked about this on the last weekend in May when we met on the Grand River. I told you what it was like last year when I was there in July. You said it must have been graded since then because it was very smooth and the Wanapitei Road to Sandy inlet was very good also. By that I would say no one should have a problem unless conditions change alot from then to when readers decide to use the roads.

Hi, everyone. I'd love to do Route # 11 from Obabika at the Goulard entrance, but I just have a Civic hatchback and so that would be impossible. Are my only alternatives to rent a 4x4 in North Bay or ask an outfitter to drop us off then pick us up?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
...Terry

Terry:
I have seen a few smaller cars parked in there over the years. You could easily make it in, if you are prepared to take your time driving in the last part of the road. There are places where there are lots of rocks sticking out that you would need to maneuver around slowly. As I recall, the road is pretty decent until you get to Emerald Lake, where the road splits going into Obabika Lodge, to the right and the left branch going west and then north. At the next branch, stay to the right and travel north passing by Wawiagama and ending at the Goulard gate where you park. Watch you don't take the west branch near Iron Lake and end up at the Obabika river.
From Sturgeon Falls it takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to get there. In a smaller vehicle add more time onto the last part of the trip from Emerald lake to the gate and you should be OK. There are other vehicles on the road and you will pass by Emerald Lake lodge and the Blue Demon Lodge on your way in.

You can pick up the portage from Wawiagama to Obabika up the road from the gate, on your right. I think it is along an old logging road so it is pretty easy to spot and it takes you out to Chinaman's bay on Obabika.

The lower end of Obabika Lake is quite different from the upper part, with lots of islands, bays and cliffs to look at.

If you do go, arrange your times so that you do the road during daylight hours and watch out for logging trucks. This year there are logging vehicles using the road from the Manitou river bridge area and again coming in from the west branch of the road ( Obabika river area) at the Iron lake junction.
