I have a little hobby of trying to work out where the Cache Lake of John J. Rowlands' "Cache Lake Country" might be. He mentions a Manitoupeepagee River. The only reference to that word I have found is in a geological survey report from 1907, where it is the name of a lake south of Lake Temagami that is now labelled Manitou Lake on the topo maps. I remember seeing the word in one of Grey Owl's books, but I have lost track of where. Does anyone here know of other places with the word Manitoupeepagee in their names or of other uses of the word?

tumpliner: Look on Craig MacDonalds Map for the historical native names in the Temagami Area. Manitou Lake is shown here: http://ottertooth.com/Temagami/Maps/nastawgan/nast aw-3C.htm Look on the lower LHS of the map shown in the link.

No predictions on ice out, but here is a little peice that may get you a whee bit excited. From Cache Lake Country by John J. Rowlands. "The break up has come and the ice is out of Cache lake! It started early one morning and when I woke up and heard a muffled rumbling sound coming through the darkness from the head of the lake I knew what it meant. There is no mistaking the thunder of ice going out. Chief Tibeash and Hank heard it, too, and when they came over we went up to the carry to watch the sight that next to geese coming north means more to us than anything else that happens in early spring. Just above the rapids where Lost Chief Stream gets into the Manitoupeepagee River, the ice jammed on the rocks and the water flooded over the banks and rushed down through the woods in a frothing torrent that kept us up on the ridge. It was not long though before the jam broke and the great blocks of ice, some as big as a wagon bed, came thundering down the main stream. You wouldn't know there were any rapids then, just tossing gray ice riding water black and cold and powerful." Thanks Hillbilly. These old reports are fascinating reading. Another similar one that also mentions Manitoupeepagee Lake is at: http://www.archive.org/stream/secondedareport02bar lgoog/secondedareport02barlgoog_djvu.txt I once found a list of first nations bands that included one with the name Manitoupeepagee, but was unable to find anything about them.
