I'm looking for a simple plan for a thunderbox for my acreage. I've used the thunderboxes in Algonquin, The Massasauga, and other backcountry parks
Any help would be appreciated |

You could try a plastic barrel, cut it in half, put a seat on the bottom part and then cut a suitable hole for it. The barrels can usually be obtained from a recycler for about $10 and you can either find a used seat or buy a cheap one for about $12. You can also use the top half of the barrel, but you have to work around the bungs to place the seat.
We put about 4 of them out on sites around Obabika last season, so it will be interesting to see how well they weathered the winter. The barrels are made of polyethylene so they should be OK, but the seats may not survive all that long.
If you poke around this site a bit you might find a picture of one that Kim made last year. |

Ed, what are the plans for emptying those barrels?
I seem to remember reading that they are used in a PP in Quebec, too. Can't remember which one, though.
I'll do some searching on CCR for alscool's post about his wooden thunderboxes, unless he pops up and re-posts it here. (hint, hint)

We cut the drums in half, dug an opening in the ground and put the open end over the hole. No emptying required, just fill in the hole when it gets full as is done with a regular Thunderbox and move it to a new location.
P.S. Brian: in the above note, I tried to use the letter "a" beside the word "hole" Guess what! It would not let me post. Had I used the letter "a" followed by two "s's" and then used the word hole,attached to that then I would not be surprised if it hadn't posted.
( I wonder if it will object to this as well?) |

The barrels we used had contained bubble gum extract.
Bet they dont smell like bubble gum now!

That is a good explanation Brian. I like that.
Now, the other drum we cut in half had been used to carry Kikomen Soya sauce.
But... if you want a real solid Thunderbox you need to see if Alscool would be willing to share his plans for a cedar one. He and his bud, Chris made several of these and they are very well built with nice lids and sliver free tops to sit upon. |
