Hey all. I've recently been playing around with the "Ontario Base Mapping" site/software, and checking out canoeable rivers in the realm of sourthern Ontario. One that has truck my eye, and i've checked out as intensivly as I can online is the Black River. The most I have found at all is of some W-W sections at some points, and pictures/sketchy dexcriptions.
Does anyone know the river? can they describe it in part? I'm planning on trying to run it from just a few KM north of Hwy 118, all the way down to Lake Simcoe (which i measured in at approximately 100 KM). I know that Kevin Callan's book about Cottage country roots covers the Black, but have not had a chance to check it out, or how much of it.
Any info?
p.s. I've also found copies broad, historical survey maps of the all of the Simcoe area in book about Ontario history in maps; it points out some waterfalls; it also seems to signify it as a canoed waterway, anyone know anything about it?

A second description is given in Hap Wilson's book: Canoeing and Hiking Wild Muskoka. ISBN 1-55046-339-X, printed in 2003 by Boston Mills Press. See page 42-49 for maps and written description. I'm sorry, I don't have that particular Kevin Callan book. |
