"Spring, A Thing of Beauty" Early Spring 'tis around tha corner & closen tha distance in my Backswoods, south of tha border. Spring 'tis pretty, just give It a few weeks! Just got over that cabin fever thin, but comen down with a touch of Spring fever. Be a picturesque view, fer sur. Spring 'tis a season of immense beauty & magnificence. Soon, tha tha open fields will be green with grass agin. Wild flowers lavishly bloomed. Trees packed + cramped, full of leaves. Tha birds & tha bees, ther arrival, once agin. Rain, warmth, wind & robins. Tha wilderness garden, 'tis lovely in tha warm breeze of tha afternoon's sunlight. Tha beautiful sunset, afterthought fer sum, but 1 to reminisce on & never to ferget. Spring is bound to make every-1 happy. I'm sur it'll arouse a stir in mr. ed's handsumeness, splash paddlen his own Bob's Special into tha uncharted, be his expected sketch of a pepper adventure. Be alluren & enticen, fer sur. Be almost time fer Black Bears to awake & get out of flooded dens to feed on sum newfangled grasses to unroot. Sunshine now begins to flow onto tha small granit mountains passes, wher winds blow ther freshness all round inland lakes. Spring storms entrance be maddenen over Superior, as well as, entertainen. And my covered-UP Mohawk Canoe's still sits & waits, fer me to make ready to gear-up to go UP NORTH, once more. Tha madness make's me abit restless & crazed, weary fer a quick, ice-out. Beauty before me, Beauty behind me, Above & below me, hovers tha beautiful, I'm surrounded by it, I'm immersed in it, In my youth, 'twas aware of it, And now abit more seasoned, I now make ready to walk quietly, on tha portage path into "Canoe Indian Country". Ther be great beauty in 'tis here poetry from 'tis wilderness canoe guy who moved his canoe down tha Wild Mistissibi rapids. I'm just tha tail's end of what 'twas, fall-in line with all tha others, but ready to soon break-out on my own, & be sumwhat of a pathfinder-2. With tha on-slaught of Spring, to do it my own way, Bear trail & all, can't wait. Spring beauty, can U picture 'tis, Heya? |

"Good Name, Rep" ed, when yer "outfit equipped", 1 never has to look back at choice 1 makes. 1 eliminate tha error of chance. I'm abit on tha lazy side & don't wanna cover tha same realestate twice over. $, time & energy be at a loss %, especialy in these here hard times. I don't make a habit of buyen things on impulse, either. Be-en "outfit equipped" means 1 is self-reliant, self-sufficient & self-contained, all-in-1. Be-en out in tha rugged remote filmen wildlife on 1's own, be a far cry from any help. Can't afford outrageous expense of be-en broke-down/or rescued-out of foreign lands. I'm an outsider, looken-in. Just 2 try-en to save whats left. If a mis-step occures & hav to be rescued out of Backswoods, me be-en, 1 of tha Otterhead Clan, ain't gonna get me safe passage/nor make it scott free fer us. Because of sum of my past brash out-cry's, wood cost me more in tha end. Even if I told them I no that guy who wears a hillbilly hat, they wood charge me more, I'm sur. That wood'nt be alscool fer us. Thats why 1 has to plan way ahead & fer-Bear all tha fer-shadowen of [what if] occures, O' fer sur. I'm not tha only 1 at stake here either. I hav to be worry-wise bout getten both me & Renee out safely. Liven on tha far edge, be-en wild at heart, has a fine line & any major botch blunders wood be 1 of Natures hard lessons learned, as well as looken like a horses has. Tha hall with that! Then when U finaly make it out of tha deep dark woods & arriven home, I no I'll hear chants of, sooner/or later we knew it wood happen to U-guys. Spend tha $ now on Superior tools of tha trade with tha features haven much merit worth. Pay less now/or quick-pay more $ later-on, do-en it half-egged/or tha hard-way, so to speak. U choose? 1's provisions + equipment must be qualified to endure long trip to take-out-end & be durable enough to stand-up to many more trips of use-abuse. My dad bought almost every thing he ever owned, out of a Sear's Catalog, regardless tha cost. Johnson Outdoors be my catalogue of preference to a range of variety of quality insured outfit tackle that I use over & over agin. Silva compasses, my Scubapro dive equipment, my Eureka tents, my Camp Trails canoe pak saks & maybe my portage barrel harness, if I can buy in USA/or Canada. I'm not sold on Old Town Canoe thin cause of my race wins with my Nova Mohawks. ed, ther be multiple barrel harness out & bout, be bewilderen, fer sur. I had my sights on Eureka Canoe Barrel Harness SS Universal + tha Stormshield Barrels, but its a wash-out now. Maple leaf ship charges be, way out ther, be way-out of wack. Sum others to choose from R Sherpa, Voyager, Harmony, Kondos, NRS Paragon Pack, Vapor, Ostrom + Headstrong Packs in harness form. All be mail out deals. Nothen close buy to try-out. Be buyen in tha blind, which I don't do. I no Johnson products backwards & forwards. I could buy that on line & no it wood work-out + last. Be trail & error with all tha rest. Maybe when we go UP NORTH will buy on tha fly after I call-UP, 1st. ed, not managen 'tis harness thin well yet. Just bought 2010 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4. Tha old truck I traded in 'twas a Ford Ranger. Tha trail & error thin 'twas already worked-out. I just perfected what I already had & followed tha tale of tha trail that works by followen suit. ed, it be tha distinct component make-up of tha character of tha thin, be with-standen & if it works, don't change, right, Heya!

Well canoebear.. I have to admit to having the same problem with Mail out things from the US. The first thing I learned is to never use UPS for anything coming across the Canada US of A Border. They charge you for shipping and then add on Brokerage fees that may be up to 50% of the value of the goods. The package, probably sits on a conveyor and gets its bar code scanned as it passes by and the so called Customs Papers get printed out along the line and pasted onto the side of the box as it passes along. And for a $150 order you might get charged an extra say $60+ for these fees. Sending stuff up here by the USPS used to be the best deal available. Maybe $5 charge for handling fees, that was all plus, shipping fees... maybe $20. Now the USPS is going bankrupt they tell me and they have increased their fees considerably..... $80 a few weeks ago to ship a bunch of cans of dried food up my way from the big potatoe State.Plus the $5 handling fee and then the Revenuers from Canada got in on the deal for another $13.23.First time that has happened on food items. So I can understand your plight with this shipping cross border thing. |

I just discovered a first here on ottertooth. I had to fix up the above post to remove an " a" from in front of "$5" I can't figure out why that combination of a letter and a dollar sign and the numeral 5 would trigger the ottertooth word police department. |

Well Canoebear, I see that Davy Crocket's film persona, Fess Parker, passed away today at ~85 years of age. A sad day, for those who followed the legend when we were young. "Davy Crocket, (the man who) grinned a bear to death" |

My brother and I wore out a 45 record listening to the Ballad of Davy Crocket on a old Phillips turntable back in the late 50's. Here's what it sounded like... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01rNP89pSyk |

"My Light In Tha Woodforest" 'Tis a sad day, a sad day indeed. 'Twas all of my past, present & future UP NORTH- far-off fantacy dream make-up be-en a wanna be, be-en a fer real "Overmountain Frontiersman. To be on Indian Territory in a rugged wilderness boundary Backswood place of "Land O' Lakes" with-in a small mountan range, "Wher Big Black Bears Be" prowlen round & to take an Indian girl of my dreams on, as my loven wife, thats right fer me, be a dream come true. To dream-up & then to live-out, all into 1, 'tis sur to be much blessed. My dad, who spoiled me rotten too, took me & tha rest of our clan in late 50's/or early 60's to Anaheim California to visit Disney Land to make sur that I saw Davey Crokett, Fess Parker, in person, & I did. I drove my family insane wearen-out all those 45's records of tha "Ballard of Davey Crokett Song", & be-en a copycat to wear His same outfit, 'twas nonstop. My parents & sisters wanted too tag me & bag me to ship me out to a distant placement to get me cured + hav me grow out of it. But tha craven allurement of undertaken of whirl wood-wind & water wood worsen, once outfitted with new campaign make-UP-look. When we arrived ther, inside tha fort, Walt Disney & Fess Parker, Mousekettiers, Jimmy & Roy all shook my little hand. Jimmy + Roy both drew up cartoon sketches fer us. 1 of Donald Duck & tha other of Plutto, which are still well preserved in plastic. Fess Parker, I mean Davey Crokett, overlook, 'twas as tall & strong as an oak, all dressed up in His buckskin shirt, pantleggens regalia & that coonskin tail hat ontop His head with "Old Betsy" at His side. Wow, what a sight fer sore eyes, that 'twas well overdue. Davey Crokett, tha "Mighty Bear Hunter" killed over 105 Black Bears in NW Tennessee in less than a years time. Went thru that stage of sharpshooten trophy Bars, but didn't have tha stomach fer it, fer a match set & got-out. My journey westward 'twas only half over. I wanted & had to see a fer real Black Bear in tha Mountain Wilds. Made our way North to Yellowstone, wher we saw multitude of brown & Black Bears millen bout. 'Twas same year small sow charged & attacked family stationwagon because I was feeden her 2 young cubs sandwich bread out tha rear back rolldown window. I recollect all tha stickers on tha rear window of all tha different places we had traveled to. Years later we vacationed westward into Canada wher I saw a fer real "Royal Canada's Mounted Police Men" with them ther Campaign Hats, that I took-on to wear as 1 of my own & still do today. 'Twas just a dream, a dream, an adventure to live out, as an outdoorsmen, to shoe + canoe into tha unknown, which I still do. My Davey Crokett + Yukon Preston dreams turned into on-go-en vision quest campaigns chasen down coons tails/or tales of tha mystery of tha unknown, which 'tis always out & about, & still out of my reach. Boon Crokett thin, -Half-horse, half-Florada gator hero, touched with snappen "Turtle" who wood wade + leap that birchbark wild river & whip His weight in eastern cougars. Sayens of His that I altered sumwhat & I took as my own, like; To hall with U all, I'm headen-out NE!, & Be sure yer North, then turn Right! Davey Crokett, son of Hawkin Crokett, 'twas named aft His grand'dad, who 'twas kilt by Cherokee Warriors led by Chief Draggen Canoe. That Bar 'twas an unhuntable Bar & died when His time come. One day I'll peter-out by tooth & claw & nobody 'tis to blame but me, exploiten Wild America's frontier's edge. Don't wanna hav any harm done to Bar who 1 day hav his way with me. Not a death wish at all, but sooner/or later be bound to have lapse error of good sense. Odds go-en in Bar's favor chance to put game-away. Fess Parker will be much missed. His tune, as planned, will be played at my dawn's wake. He is & always will be "Tha King Of Tha Wild Frontier" & I'll Bear-UP, & will carry move-on in His honor. Dreams be true interpretations of our inclinations wher a path emerges under a full moon's glow. Davey, Davey Crokett, Heya! |

Many of my young friends wore those coonskin hats in the early 50's. I don't recall ever having been successful at getting my parents to buy me one and I didn't make it to Disney to see Fess Parker either. The closest I ever got to the real Davy Crockett was visiting the Alamo, an American Shrine, while in San Antonio. Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone fought Santa Anna and were both killed by the Mexican army. |

I think glass eyes! Still have the hat, would you believe, up in my sister's attic...I'll go get it tomorrow. To think Davy was the same age I was when I killed my first bear. Any of you Otterheads on Facebook and want to be friends? Ask me to be. From time to time I am going to post photos of my canoe art on Facebook. There is one photo there now. The Turtle
