Sorry to hear that canoebear.
I know how you feel about losing a friend.
About 4 and a bit years ago it was time for our 15 year old Springer Spaniel "Biscuit" to go to the happy hunting ground.
I vowed I would never get another dog.

I lasted all of 2 months and went out and got "Pepper", a Jack Russell Terrier.
She has now become our dog for all seasons and all family members.
I hate to think where I would live if I ever returned home from one of my canoe expeditions without her.

Ed.

I got Bertha on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in 1970.

Her Dad was a pure pedigree collie from Illinois and her mom was a huge black reservation mut.

Bertha was the runt of the litter and her brothers and sisters would not let her in to suck.

She fit in the palm of my hand when I fed her.

She grew up to be a special dog.

Beautiful coat...leaped like a deer [ actually defied gravity - would hang suspended in mid air for seconds before decending during her leaps.].

She was born deformed...her head and nose was crooked and her tongue came out the side of her mouth. Bertha could not close her left eye.

She had mange and distemper...all her teeth became gnarled and yellowed.

She had brain damage...too long a story to go into here!

Returning back to base camp from a canoe trip and to be geeted by Bertha, my companion for 13 1/2 years, was a joy.

I ' dream ' of Bertha often...and these dreams are pure joy...it is as if I never experienced the day when she was blind, diabetic and could hardly walk for the tumor and I had to ' but her down '. [ She did not die in her sleep as I had hoped but we truly had a visitation from an angel that gave me the ' sign from above ' to alow Bertha to move on ].

Canoebear...you and your family will ' dream ' of Cuddles. There will be many dreams of pure joy.

This I can promise you!!!

The Turtle

"and another"

Our 16 year old cat Wally, passed on 'tis
1st day of winter. 1990 Wally was shot 3 times
in head & back by cross-tha-street neighbor with a 22 cal. rim fire rifle. With lots of luven care
from us, Wally's-Will prevailed-on.
Tommorow we will return Him to tha earth in
which He came.

Tha fire died, and tha room went dark.

Had to put our 13 year old Black Lab down on Monday afternoon. I know how you feel canoebear. Guess we won't be spending our mornings next summer wondering what Island he's swam to this time.
