20 year old Popular Science and Mechanics and Harrowsmith.
2 tabloid "pulp" music mags that could also be used as TP.
Comics?....Good idea.I will replenish the reading material this summer.
Foot rest?.....I will include that in the next design. |

A small bag of limestone, like you would spread on the yard, would be a nice touch. A scoop sprinkled lightly over top of the pile now and then, will increase ph, and allow bacteria to consume the poop. It would allows for more movements, with less thunderbox movement. It will reduces olfactory impact too. |

The economy model (Dr.B model)is a more practical defacation unit.It is easier to transport to a suitable site. No field maintenance is required.The optional waterproof bucket can be readly attached.
Alscool and C Mel manufactured a fully portageable wooden unit .It was portaged into a remote area of Temagami and assembled at the site.

Thanks for the offer....but......
I visited the deluxe T box at Ranger Point on Easter weekend.I have a serious design flaw.
I did not account for severe snow load and the roof broke off. I will have to make a field visit and do a repair.
The journal entries were very interesting and funny.
Everyone loved the solar light and the supplied reading material! |

Spring is almost here, when an old man’s fancy turns to…..thunder box plans. I am constructing two thunder boxes for Obabika. I’ll be taking them to the lake in late May.
I need to know where they are needed most, as in popular campsites without facilities (I believe Ranger Point is covered.)
I also plan to try and re-claim the portages from the bay on Obabika with the LUP cabin up to Clearwater Lake. Last time I was over the portage from Obabika to Clearwater across from Obabika Inlet, it was in pretty good shape, but it’s been 5 years or so. I may work a little on that one too if needed. When it is completed, it will probably make for a nice one day loop if folks get wind bound on Obabika.
What, if any regulations should be followed. Also is MNR involvement necessary?

As per my map it is about 2km south of the Obabika Inlet portage.
As far as I know that area is crown land and not within any park so the MNR has little control over Crown Land.
I will be on Obabika Lake the 1st week of July. If you are going to portage to Clearwater, please mark the portage entrance and let me know approx. portage entrance. I would like to go there. I plan on spending a week on Obabika and whant to do day trips or over night trips to other small lakes. If I can get to Clearwater Lake I just may try to portage to Fry Lake and then to Little Fry Lake.

I plan on putting up 3 thunderboxes in the area. One site I know that needs a thunderbox is the site on the east site of the lake across from the rockslide south of the narrows( south of Obabika Inlet). Many canoe camp groups stop there. I am not sure if there is a thunderbox at the portage campsite on the Obabika Lake side at from Obabika Inlet. I know most of the campsites north of the narrows has thunderboxes. If anyone knows of site north of the narrows that do not have thunderboxes let me know.

A new box is needed at the site immediately North of the mouth of the Obabika River.The one on the site has almost fallen apart.

I think I will for the one Ed suggested and maybe the one across from the rock slide. I may not be able to carry much more in my canoe with gear unless I keep going back to my vehicle to loadup. The 20lt. pails I can get at work. I will probably be puting up 3 or 4 when I'm there the first of July.

I'm just planning for t' boxes. Regrets, I know that's not how you roll.
I guess Obabika River, and accross from the Rock slide will get the boxes. Expect them to be there Victoria Day.

It would be interesting to open up the portages into Clearwater and back south into Obabika. This would provide an short circle route for a one or two day adventure.
I have often thought that opening up the route off the Sturgeon from Wawiashkashi North to Manitou and then into Emerald and the lower Obabika would also be useful, even though those lakes have motorboats on them. |

The traditional Nastawgan into southern Obabika from Emerald via Pond Lake went through where the Obabika Lodge is now, but there is an alternative over to the east where Rachel Creek comes into the lake. It avoids the two cottages and the Lodge. I used to have it signed, but they are mostly gone now. Souvineirs for someone I suppose. I walk the trail every spring to clear it of blowdowns, and deadfall. It is a former logging road, and a great little portage trail. Wide enough to carry two boats abreast, not many rocks. The last 10 meters down Rachel to the lake isn't really well worn in yet.
Clearwater is a beauty of a little lake, and appropriately named too. I think the north portage may be in pretty good shape, it was the last time I went accross it. I'll check it this May anyway. I don't imagine the South leg back will be too difficult to find, but I don't think it has been used in several decades. I went into the first pond twenty-five years ago I guess, but didn't realize you could get into Clearwater that way.
What are the possibilities that MNR would provide some signage?

If you go into Clearwater in May mark or flag the portage and when I am there July 1 - 9 I will try to cut the portages south into Obabika and over to Fry Lake. This year insead of tripping I plan to work on somethings On Obabika Lakeand cutting those portages along with T boxes is as good a job as any.
If you are going to put T boxes at the Obabika River, and accross from the Rock slide the I will find two other sites to put them up.

That was a concern of mine, I'll write to the MNR in North Bay and find out if there are any regulations that need to be followed, or if any permits are needed. I'll see if I can't get some of the MNR offical signs for the portages too.
It appears that the route into Obabika via Fry Lake is mostly along the streams, with just one section of about 50 meters from Clearwater to Fry. We'll see how it goes, it may not take too much clearing at all.

Folks,
I decided to cut to the chase and called the MNR in North Bay. The MNR people were very nice and happy to provide information.
No permit is required for “Brushing” an existing trail. If “Merchantable Timber” (4” diameter at breast high) needs to be cut, a permit is necessary and available at their office after completing the requisite paperwork.
No signs are currently available, so I guess I’ll paint blaze the re-opened portages, and “T” box trails, “Blaze Orange” for portages, and “Medium Blue” for thunderboxes.

We seen a girls group from Camp Wabun cutting their way from Fry to Obabika last August.
I would suggest taking the time to expolore the area first before making another trail. |
