Here's the official invitation sent out by Earthroots: Changing of the Seasons Gathering in Temagami Friday September 13th - Monday September 15th, 2008 Obabika Lake, Temagami Over the weekend of September 13th, Alex Mathias, an Ojibway elder, will host his annual ceremony to mark the fall equinox on his traditional family territory in the Temagami region of Ontario. It will be a weekend of wilderness camping, solidarity and learning about the old-growth forests that make Temagami unique. On Saturday there will be a 'Changing of the Seasons' ceremony, guest speakers, a potluck lunch, visits to Spirit Rock, and guided hikes through the old-growth forest. Attendees have the option of participating in group events after the ceremony, exploring the area on their own, or simply enjoying some quiet time on the lake. Other optional activities may include a sweat lodge and tree climbing workshops. There is no structured agenda for the weekend and Sunday is an open day which could include a guided canoe excursion for those who are interested. Participants are expected to provide their own food and gear. Earthroots will be renting canoes for people who don't have access to their own and this cost will be shared between the group. Most people will be located at the main campsite on the north end of Obabika Lake where the ceremony will take place. Some basic paddling experience is required. Earthroots will be organizing carpools for people located in the GTA (leaving Toronto Friday AM and then heading back from Temagami Monday AM). If you need a ride or you have a vehicle with space for others, let us know. Please be aware that the last stretch of the drive is very rough and slow going (directions will be provided once you have registered). Last year's event was the biggest yet with over 100 participants including a crew from CityTV. You can view photos of last year's gathering in the gallery section of the Earthroots website. For more information or to register, please contact Mike McIntosh at mike@earthroots.org / 416-599-0152 x0. There will be a nominal fee based on the costs to run the event.

Alscool, I think you meant the invitations went out April 2002, but the first ceremony was in June of that year. http://www.ottertooth.com/Temagami/News/02/june24. htm

A communal meal is planned for Saturday Sept 13 around noon. We are planning food for 125 people this year . Due to rising food costs we are asking for some assistance. Alex Mathias will be providing moose stew and bannock again this year, but there will not be enough to feed 125 people . This year we are requesting that participants try to bring some food to share for a Saturday pot luck meal . We realize that this will be impossible for some of you paddling to the gathering, but we are asking those that can ,please bring some extra food to share with the group. Historically the group has been 50/50 .....carnivore and vegetarian . Could you also bring your own plates and utensils? A dish washing station will be provided. thanks Kim

Gosh, thought for a minute there it would have to be re-named "Gathering of the Greybeards"! Nice pics, Kimmie. Who knew you had skills? Alscool...so glad the kids get their looks from their Mom. (Holy heck...look at Alison...a young lady now!) Barbara |
