One more question - my husband is American, I am Canadian. I am assuming because I am Canadian I don't need a permit on Crown Land, and that he won't need one either. But is that even an issue on the campsites?

Also,
watch out for winds from the south when returning down Matagamasi. They can whip up the whitecaps in no time and delay your "exit"!

Crown Land permits depend on residency not citizenship.

Tourism Thunder Bay disagrees slightly as they say Canadian citizens are exempt.

Canadian citizens do not need a permit, even if they are non-residents. That MNR page is misleading. It is explicitly stated in the regulations of the Public Lands Act that a Canadian citizen IS a resident. (I didn't write this stuff.)

Yeah, actually, I am one of the few people who has read some of those laws, too. Every once in awhile I go somewhere where they basically tell me I have to pay (even though I can still legally vote in Ontario), but legally I should not have to. Nice to have the link, though. Thanks, Brian.

Thanks Brian for that link. It makes a heck of a lot better sense than the ones I found.

It might pay off to print that one out and have on hand.

Hey, I just wanted to thank you all for what seems like some great advice. Sprotsman's Lodge is very accommodating, and we'll be staying there before heading out, so we should be able to get some up to date reports on portages etc... renting a canoe from them as well. The route seems just like what we are looking for. And the advice about permits has been very helpful as well. Now we just need to order our topos and plan our dinners! This has been a really helpful place to go. And Ed, you have been particularly helpful. Thanks so much!!

Of course, new questions come up all the time...here is another. Ed recommended to to start on the Matagamsi, but what about starting from Kukagami? Any reason not to?

Are you asking if you can do the route in the reverse direction?
You would have to start at Kukagami and go into Donald. This is a different trip which would add additional time beyond the 5 nights you said you have available.

Or are you asking if you can start on Kukagami and go from there to Matagamasi by canoe, avoiding the 15 minute shuttle to Mattagamasi?
Yes that is possible, but you may not like the condition of the portages that allow you to do that. I believe it takes 3 portages to go to Matagamasi.I know that 1 of them is in good shape, but I don't know the condition of the other 2.

No, I was just asking why have a shuttle and not just put in from the lodge. That is good to know about the portages. We are planning do the same route that "canoedog" did (thanks again for that link), but are a bit worried about fixing a pickup time - either waiting around or showing up late. So we may just paddle right back to the lodge at the end of our trip. But maybe we'll wait to hear to ask George at Sportsman's when we arrive.

I got a custom topo from my topo.com. The whole route fits on one sheet, waterproof paper.

Sometimes its a good deal when you have that trip that needs parts of four or five topos.

I also have topocanda v. 4 loaded into my GPS.

Plus I did laminate all the campsite info from Brians maps for my personal quick reference.

I had forgotten that Canoedog had gone up the NE Arm of Matagamasi to start.
OK! You could easily drive yourself to the put-in on Matagamasi from Sportsman's Lodge and if you are going in during the week you should be able to find a parking spot at the put-in.
If you are driving an expensive vehicle you might want to consider the Shuttle again and have Sportsman's Lodge look after your vehicle,(paid parking). If you are driving an older vehicle and decide to park there, then leave any valuables out of sight, locked in your trunk. You should not have any problem. I haven't heard of any vandalism at that access point, but it could happen.

We are going to try to get an early start, too, so that we can head right to Wolf Lake on Day 1, so the put in at Matagamasi would probably be best for us. I also think the 5 bucks a day for parking at Sportman's is worth the sense of security. (We live in NYC, and my husband just commented that he doesn't even know how to unlock the trunk lol).

At the moment we have plans to go through Stouffer and do the Sturgeon loop, and then come back through Evelyn. Any chance that water levels will preclude this late in the summer? Does the Sturgeon ever get too low?

(We also got custom topos from mytopo.com, though we had to get two to fit in the Sturgeon loop.)

I would suggest you check this Forum in late July and ask the water level question at that time. At present we have had an unusual Spring and levels are somewhat lower than normal. But that could change if we get a lot of rain.
