Day 6 search: "Thanks" to Terry Aho who arranged a flyover today by BAY SAR. Terry also provided an underwater camera/laptop and spent time with Don checking shorelines and sharing his experience. He too has a loved one missing, since Oct. 12, 2009. As posted on the OPP Missing Persons site "Robert (Robbie) left Land O'Lakes Cottages located in Martin River heading West Bound on Highway 64 towards Field". Although nothing was found in today's search, tomorrow is a brand new day. The blessing of the day was an opportunity for two men, Don and Terry, both with missing sons, to connect and share. We hope the "super moon" tonight brings Daniel and Robbie comfort and light, watching over both of them.

I did have this idea come to me last night but perhaps it has already been done/suggested previously. With canoe camp season around the corner, has any thought been given to contacting all the camp directors? And not just in Temagami as even some of the Algonquin Park camps make treks into the Temagami region. Even all the lodge/resort owners too, however, their guests tend not to stray too far from base, unlike the canoe camps. Also, "Three Buoys" out of Temagami...perhaps they would even consider putting up the posters in their houseboats. |

....further to the above...the directors may make discretionary age-appropiate decisions about which/if any campers to inform, but they can certainly brief all their adult trip staff and guides to be on the look out. |

Day 7 search (Sunday): What a beautiful day! Some shore and cliff/mtn search was done. They found some non-clothing items of interest (carvings, spears, hair), checking further to determine if Daniel could have made these. He is known for making arrows from scratch. Again, the important thing is to make note of where found, coordinates if possible and do not disturb items. Transition in searchers today, 1 went home, 2 more up with a 2nd boat. maramar: Your idea is bang on. We emailed an update to authorities, all camps, lodges, outfitters, marinas, and businesses in the area. We are going to publish an easy to use "Find Dan" pocket card to raise awareness that he is missing, what to look for, how to report and contacts. We can then update the search map. The idea is that if others are out there, they can help our search efforts and eliminate duplicated efforts. This will be more useful than a flyer and will be handed out by Parks/MNR with permits and licenses. We will also supply them to the chamber, lake association members, places where people may stop to get provisions before going into the backcountry. We need to target everyone going into this area, everyone needs to be alerted and be on the lookout for signs of Daniel. Together we can do this ! |

Day 8 search (Mon.): Magical day, the "Find Daniel" design team were busy creating a new pocket card, which will then be produced soon and on its way up to Temagami, for mass distribution by the wonderful folks up there. Didn't heard from hubby tonight, the OPP said they were going to see him this afternoon, along with the TFN Police to pick up the items found yesterday and review our search plans....so why haven't I heard anything? Day 9 search (Tues.): I heard from hubby this morning, a statement was given to OPP by Adam for the items found, and search plans were discussed yesterday. Rainy, and the black flies are out. Via message to Kelly from Adam tonight, they "got a lot of ground covered" today. OPP were out today doing ground (foot) and air (helicoptor) searching. OPP told me yesterday, if they find anything, they would let me know. So, no news is good news. |

Day 10 search (Wed.): Devil Rock area was searched extensively, no further findings. Rain, rain, and more rain. I was cut off when speaking with hubby tonight, minutes used up on the SAT phone, my job never ends..., so next update should have more information. FYI, others did search at Obabika River dam, but nothing. The search at Spirit Rock was also delayed due to the rain. Stay tuned. |

Just wondering if there's a way for people to help without joining the main search party or just "keeping their eyes open." I'm thinking of people who are planning a canoe or other trip through the search area, perhaps they could do a detailed search of a particular section. For instance, there will be a zillion people going over Sharp Rock Portage, so no need to have people search that. But perhaps someone could volunteer to spend a 1/2 day on their trip to do a detailed search of the Red Squirrel Road and side roads west of Sharp Rock to the Bob Lake portage. You could coordinate, so if you know that a certain area has already been searched, then you could suggest another area along the person's route. Basically if everyone going into the Temagami backcountry would spend 1/2 a day searching, then the entire area will be covered by mid-summer. But it needs coordination so we're not just re-searching the same areas. |

Update: Week 27, search continues, OPP and TFN Police have been actively involved in both ground and air search. I'm packing to go up tomorrow. Our sincere thanks to all the folks coming and going to help in our search for Daniel, especially our family of fire service friends, as well as Terry Aho, another dad who's son Robbie is missing (see Day 6 search). curly: Bang on, I'll be coming up to Temagami with 3,500 pocket cards to be distributed to Parks, MNR, Chamber, local business, outfitters, canoe and houseboat rentals etc. The intent is to get in the hands of everyone who is going into the backcountry. We are including what to look for, what to do if something is found, contact info and request to let us know where they were, so we can check it off the map, minimizing duplicate effort. Our initial search plan only had 8 specific areas identified, ones we thought Daniel may be or have gone to. The pocket card is the 2nd phase. Not sure what the 3rd will be, but hopefully we will not need it. OPP have also discussed assigning a coordinator, I'm certainly no expert and would appreciate this greatly. Great idea curly, I wished I had thought of it in the winter and have been ready by now, permits are starting to be issued this week; the pocket card will be included with all permits and licenses issued. The folks at Camp Wanapetei are in the middle of getting ready for the season and have been extremely kind and flexible in letting our search team stay there. I'm looking forward to meeting these wonderful people tomorrow. Day 11 search: I received an email update from Adam tonight: "Yesterday we walked red squirrel rd past the gate as well as the aston ridge trail to the end. Never found a lot along the trail other then some curiously placed rocks, I took some pictures if your interested but wasent overly exciting. Today we walked out from the camp towards ferguson made it down the decent driving rd about 2miles. Did some bushwacking but didn't find anything but some nice caves on one cliff (no signs) and moose droppings." See what else they came upon, luckily at a safe distance: So, once again everyone, be safe ! |

Regarding the triangle shaped rock: The shape and eye reminded me of a Pyramid with the "seeing eye" on the back of a US $1 bill. Any chance he ventured South? Also the three dots - possible symbolism: The ideogram consisting of three points arranged triangularly is used in mathematics and geometry between other signs, and then means thus, consequently, because of, or therefore. The same sign tattooed on the skin between the forefinger and the thumb is known as hobo dots in Sweden, and probably has a protective significance. The three hobo dots are said to be symbols of faith, hope and love. On US maps is sometimes used to signify a ruin. In other contexts the sign has been used to represent silver. There appears to be score line on the right edge maybe used to snap off this rock from some other piece. What looks like a "thunderbird" looks like two people to me. The left drawing that of a women. His finger is in the bottom right of the picture. Too bad this wasn't a digital picture - otherwise you may get location data from the picture. What were the pictures before and after this one? He maybe hoboing South in the US. Maybe visiting a female friend. Just some thoughts. CS |

Update: Day 12-14, sorry I haven't updated, been very overwhelming. The folks at Wanapitei are very accommodating and supportive, and all settled into their beautiful Chateau. We took a boat ride on Sat. to show me the areas searched and the items found, these are surely Daniel's doing. I was overcome with a flood of emotions, realizing how immense the search area is, how high some of those mountains and rough terrain, and so many people eagerly coming forward to assist in finding Daniel. We have started delivering the pocket cards and going into Temagami tomorrow to distribute to Parks and MNR (arrived too late on Friday) and to meet with OPP. Mother's Day brought joy and renewed hope starting with Adam and hubby making a wonderful breakfast for us all, and news from Kim Cowan and Alex Mathis who have been searching Chee-Skon Lk and Spirit Rock area. They found a "cross", which we believe was made by Daniel. However, our thought is that it is the letter "T" for Trask, and the red bandana signifies the family colour worn at our annual family reunion, Don came to this interpretation just know as we were trying to understand the message Daniel is trying to give us. Again, this is a concrete lead for to investigate immediately. cshunters: Although possible, we still strongly believe Daniel is on a spiritual journey and is where he would want to be. The three dots meaning "therefore", followed by his initials DT is how he signed his art work, don't believe there is any deeper meaning, but something to think about. |

Update: Day 15, Adam and 2 friends walked 40km today from Camp Wanapitei to 1hr past Sharp Rock portage, nothing significant found, number of rock formations. Nearly tuckered out the newbie trekker of the firefighters in the group, a steak dinner and beer appears to help recovery. Donny and I were into Temagami, distributed pocket cards and spoke to OPP on shift, still need to finalize plans. Learned today that the "T" marker was seen there Sept. 16th. Daniel was up there then and we still believe this was made by him. Will be talking with OPP on Daniel's case tomorrow night, more to follow. A group from the Bear Island Canoe Builder team is planning to canoe to Obabika from Bear Island in a "Big canoe". Could pick up 1-2 more searchers on Lake Temagami on May 18 or Obabika on May 19. Let me know if you are interested, or contact Adam Arshack-Wicks adamwicksarshack@gmail.com |

Day 16-17 search, the last two days have been focused on ground searching west via Red Squirrel Rd, past Bob Lake to Chee-skon Lk area, including Spirit Rock. Our thanks to Graham, MNR for joining our search on these 2 days, as well as Tom, Jay, Matt and Gord. He certainly has a wealth of information about the area and a great assist. Got close to recovering the "T" cross, but too boggy, had to turn back (they did 18kms). In addition to park permits (thanks to Kelly Frost and Sylvie Aumond), the area parks superintendent has confirmed Daniel's information has been distributed to over 40 pilots who travel the interior of Temagami frequently, thanks to Kevin Pinkerton's quick action to assist our search. Cards will also be shared when permits are issued and a supply has been sent to Roel Teunissen in Sudbury. We talked with OPP last night, assessing next steps and possible further air search to focus on Spirit Rock and Spirit Forest area. While waiting for morning coffee today, we had the opportunity to watch momma bear and her cub meandering in the backyard at the Wanapitei Chateau, not your normal morning view, it was awesome!

Let this whole situation be a lesson. If you decide to go on a vision quest, let somebody know where you are going and how long you will be there. Even the originators of the vision quest, the natives, knew where their loved ones were going. This avoids a plethora of anxiety for friends and family and alot of resources being spent on search efforts. If this guy is ok, and I pray every day that he is, he needs to make contact instead of leaving vague signs of his existance. If he has decided to live his life as a hermit in the Temagami Wilderness, so be it. JUST LET US KNOW! PLEASE! |

I offer the following words in response to "pine_sap" above after a lengthy discussion with my wife who, as a psychotherapist, works extensively with persons dealing with trauma. A missing child -- no matter what age -- is undoubtedly the most unimaginably painful, traumatic experience for any parent. Right now we should not lose sight of what Maureen, Don and family have been going through for the past 6 1/2 months. Despite their gracious and generous attempts to keep us all up to date on the search, much of their pain, insights and concerns about Daniel are likely, and rightly so, kept private. Of course ideally anyone venturing out into the backcountry informs loved ones of their route, but at this point in time it's a moot point and I believe that bringing it up at this time is not helpful for the family on so many levels. Any and all "resources being spent" on searching for Daniel are no match for the emotional cost that the family has shouldered. We can all support the family by honouring Daniel's "Journey" even if we may not be able to understand it. |

My comment was not meant to be hurtful. I support all search efforts. In fact I would be helping if I wasnt bogged down here at home. I probably could have worded my comment better. I was just thinking about his family and how distraught they must be. I was thinking about my own children and how I would be feeling if one of them had gone missing. |

pine_sap: No harm taken. We too, try to rationalize this troubling situation. Contact is simple, why has Daniel not contacted anyone? Our only answer is he would contact us if he could. He cares a lot about his family and friends. We and those who care about him, must do whatever is in our power to search for him, giving us focus and hope. maramar: We appreciate your insightful words and support. Noone prepares you for this, it's not like a death, where you know what you are grieving. We draw strength from family, friends and supportive folks like you and the community on this forum. |

Update: Week 28, search efforts of the Ferguson Bay area are now exhausted. We concluded search Day 18 (Thur.) with a shoreline search down to Bear Island and back. We stopped at Bear Island to drop off pocket cards at the Temagami First Nation band administration and had the pleasure of meeting Chief Roxanne Ayotte and a number of councillors, all very supportive of our search for Daniel. We also visited "The Power of the Canoe" birchbark building group (Adam and John) who are on Bear Island teaching the youth how to build these canoes in the traditional manner. They are headed out on an excursion to Obabika and Chee-Skon lakes, and Maple Mtn, along with Conor Mihell and his wife from Sault Ste. Marie who have been very supportive. They will assist in retrieving the "T" cross for OPP analysis and will check if anything is buried there. They will be keeping a lookout for any other signs of Daniel and cover an area that was in our initial search plans. We had hoped to meet with them as they left Friday morning, but noone in sight, I think we missed them. With the rain coming down strong, we carried on to the landing for our departure home. My weeklong stay ended with the question what does Wanapitei mean? I got various answers from Smoke on the Water, to ... now I can't remember. Well, after surfing the net, I've learned "the name Wanapitei (pronounced wawna - puh - TAY) comes from the Anishnabai name Wanapiteiping, which means "oblong body of water, full to overflowing." Camp Wanapitei's 42-acre property, located on Lake Temagami, is surrounded by beach, river and forest." Now we all know the meaning, and it truly is a very beautiful place. After our farewell get together Thursday night with our new friends at Camp Wanapitei, we returned home yesterday to regroup. Our sincere thanks to all those who made us feel right at home, Ted, Jeff, Eoin, Emma, and all the leaders at Camp Wanapitei. Special thanks to the owners and directors, for allowing us to stay at Camp Wanapitei, your generosity and support throughout our search is deeply appreciated. Our son Adam, arranged for a number of firefighters and friends to come up and all helped in a very physical search for Daniel. Dmitri and Kostya were helpful in sharing their experience with Daniel when they met him in the summer and helped the search team as well. We could not have done this without all of you! Graham Mewett with MNR, Temagami Mgmt Unit Silviculture, has been a terrific help in our search. In addition to joining the search team, he has suggested Sir Devon Road would be a good place to search, indicating they are flying this road in mid-June by helicopter. He is also planning on searching the Beauty Lake Road area by truck (the full length of it) in the next two weeks, as no one has been in there (past Wakimika Lake) this spring. Know that we are doing what we believe is necessary to find Daniel and appreciate all the support and assistance in searching. Noone prepares parents for this, regardless of the age of their missing loved one. We gain strength from those supporting us through this very emotional time.

Update: Week 29, we have some good news! The canoe group, who left from Bear Island on Friday May 18th, recovered the "T" cross and provided it to the OPP for analysis, checked but nothing buried around or underneath it. But more uplifting, thanks to the sharp eye of Conor, he spotted Daniel's limegreen snowpants from the water! It was by fate or destiny, that he and his wife Kim were canoeing further behind the group on the east side of Diamond Lake due to the winds. He told me normally they would be on the west side admiring the pictographs. The OPP have since recovered these pants, and the Columbia blue and white jacket and a blue scarf which were found further away. There were signs of some wood chopping, but no signs of a firepit or burning near by. The canoe group camped here for the night (Sun.) and then headed to Camp Wanapitei the next morning (Mon.) to call us and to inform the OPP. This was a very welcomed call, giving us additional affirmation that Daniel was in the area. This was on our list of areas to check, having gone home to regroup and plan our next steps on the same Friday that the canoe group set out. Once again, Camp Wanapitei welcomed this group without any hesitation, they are truly amazing folks! We wondered if Daniel wanted to be found, now there is no doubt in our mind, he does. The more somber news is that the clothing was weathered, likely having been there from the fall. In any case, it narrows down the search area substantially. We are very thankful to this group for finding these items and for cutting their trip short to alert us and the officials of their find. The search by OPP, coordinated by Mike Larocque, has been underway since then, actively searching in this area. He shared this morning that further analysis will be done and that they will likely go back in the near future with some different search techniques. We need to give the OPP search team time to do their job, they are the professionals and best to conduct a thorough investigation and search. Yes, we are on pins and needles, wishing we were there, but we must remain patient for them to do their job. My husband Don, our son Adam, firefighter friends Matt and Rob, and myself had the pleasure last Thursday of meeting members Adam Wicks-Arshack and John Zinser who are on Bear Island leading the "Power of the Canoe" project, as they were getting the 25' canoe ready for the trip. My heart was warmed from a message on Tuesday sent by Adam and his group: "After finding the clothing items, that night we all just sat in silence for a long time, thinking, and sending thoughts to your family. As we were sitting on the banks of the glassy still lake the most incredible shooting star passed over head, from the site where we found everything across the lake. The rest of the guys watched it up in the sky, I watched it's reflection completely on the lake. Where ever Daniel is, we know his spirit is with the land, sky and everything living in this beautiful country. It was very powerful and moving and we just want you to know our thoughts and prayers are with your family. Please let us know if there is ANYTHING we can do. Adam, John, Daniel and Tim". It is amazing how Daniel's disappearance has connected us with so many wonderful people, including the Ottertooth community. Please realize that we were not purposefully keeping information from you, we just needed time to share with our family and give us time to process it ourselves. Bear Island, "The Power of the Canoe - Birchbark Canoes and Native Youth" project, Thurs. May 17, 2012

I would also like to express my thanks to Camp Wanapitei. Conor and I paddled into the camp on Monday morning at about 9:30, the morning after our group found Daniel’s clothing. The staff graciously welcomed us, cleared out a cabin for us to stay in, and even offered dog food for our dog. We spent two days at the camp, and very much appreciate the hospitality. So thanks again, we enjoyed meeting everyone, and we hope to get back up to your beautiful neck of the woods again soon. To the Trask Family – Our thoughts are with you, and we can only imagine what it is you are going through. We sincerely hope that the items our group found will help you find Daniel soon, and please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help. Kim

This was sent by Ron Miller: It may be nothing, but we were flying today over Diamond-Bob lake area and the road going south to Obabika Inlet. We did notice something that appeared lime green in a bay of a small lake south west of Bob lake and just a little west of the road going south. It may have only been the green bushes, but we read they found lime-green snow pants on Diamond lake. This small lake, I think, is east of Spirit Rock. The lake and bay from Google is N47 07 41 W 80 14 55 and/or either N 47 07 37 W 80 14 42. We also sent Kevin Pinkerton from MNR Parks an email about things we spotted mid-May while flying and he said he would forward it to the OPP. This was after we got a copy of the Trask missing-person card. It was about a canoe that had drifted off the Lady Evelyn to Diamond Falls area and hiding to the east of the falls behind an island, sitting upright, and a camp on the very northeast corner of Diamond lake. |

Update: Week 30, the OPP have concluded their 2 day ground search with cadaver dogs, negative. They did find some additional items, but nothing sounds like things of Daniel's. Apparently, many campers leave many things behind, so much for a smaller footprint! The search covered 800 meters around where the winter clothing items were found. They also searched Lady Evelyn, about 1km on either side where it meets Diamond Lk, including portages and camp sites, nothing found. So, next step: The OPP search coordinator is looking into bringing in divers to search Diamond and Lady Evelyn lakes, plans are to be confirmed early next week. To Ron Miller: OPP have checked on the boat behind the island east of the river from Diamond Lk flowing into Lady Evelyn and the Diamond camp at the very NE end of Diamond Lk just around the NW corner from the river falls, no signs of Daniel. "Thanks" to Rick Lockhart for checking his outpost camp on Diamond Lk and offering his boats to help in the search. Trip info from Harold Keevil: "I've been in Sharp Rock for the past two weeks, and have been keeping my eyes open. We've been hiking in the hills around Thunderhead Lake, and have followed an old logging road that runs from Sharp Rock to the Red Squirrel road (didn't get all the way). I was actually hoping I'd find Dan holed up in my cottage when I arrived. I'd like to know where on Diamond's east shore his clothing was found. I plan to check out a back route into Diamond my next trip, which will be soon." (Found on the NE side almost directly across from the pictographs on the west side, pants spotted from the water on a rock area, jacket found further away in the bush). We are thankful for all the efforts and resources focused on searching for Daniel this week, particularly with the challenge of dealing with the many forest fires in the area. I just learned there was smoke/fire spotted on Obabika Lk and Ferguson Mtn today. This is unwelcomed news, so many people impacted, let's all do the rain dance tonight. "Thank You" to all our family and friends who are taking this journey with us, I know we haven't been easy to be around some times (OK, that would be me): - Temagami and Bear Island community, for your neverending support and assistance. - Harold Martin and Rick May, for taking Daniel's car back home and helping in the search while up there; - Brian Back, for taking the time to speak with us and writing the updated News Brief on Ottertooth; - Hap Wilson, for your ongoing expertise, insight and intimate knowledge of the area; - Alex Mathias, Kim Cowan and Don Wright, for your continuous search efforts, help and understanding; - Lakeland Airways, for informing your pilots about Daniel missing and being on the lookout; and - Kim and Conor Mihell, for taking time to meet with us on Sat. (well Conor anyway, hope to meet Kim too), and for your genuine interest in Daniel's journey.
Enlightening words from Jane Booth-Robertson: "Hope is the motivation that enourages us to open the door of opportunity and take a step forward. It works hand in hand with faith, trust and love." It is comforting to know that the Ottertooth community has been there for us, since day one, and we are very, very, grateful. Together, we will find Daniel. I'd like to share a "Smilebox" of Daniel's pictures from his Sept. trip. They were on a disposable camera found in his car when Don was up for the initial search in the fall. These pictures speak to who Daniel was and his love and respect of Temagami http://smilebox.com/play/4d7a45334e5455354d6a413d0d0a&sb=1 |
