Spring Search Update 3: Don and I arrived home late Mon. June 2nd. I had not originally planned to go up this spring, but so pleased I did, Adam and I arrived Fri. May 23rd. It gave me an opportunity to meet the MibSAR team again (Michael, Cathy, Todd) and Dave who is a newcomer this year to this search area. It was nice that we could all be up there as a family, if Daniel was found, but still not the end of our journey to finding Daniel.

The MibSAR team covered a lot of area, involving an extensive search for habitable caves in the Lady Evelyn Lake and Willow Island Lake bush that Daniel spoke of visiting. The search covered the west shoreline of Lady Evelyn into the small lake (296), around that lake and west to the area Daniel spoke to us as having tomb like caves. The search team indeed found a lot of rocks, ridges, crevasses, overhangs and some small cave like areas. Although some of these had areas large enough for them to lay in, they were not really tomb like as described by Daniel. Some ice still remained in the deeper crevasses. The small lake was beautiful, with a sand beach around it. From one high ridge, the search team could see the Maple Mountain tower in the distance to the west. I could imaging Daniel looking at it too from that high vantage point.

This area proved to be quite a longer and strenuous trek from where Daniel's winter clothing was found. In reflecting, it would be highly unlikely that Daniel could made it this far, especially without his winter clothing. So, the MibSAR team are gearing up for searching further out from around where the winter clothing and the tree choppings were found. They will also consider searching the ridge and small lake up behind the pictographs, since Daniel was attracted to high areas. This operation is planned for Aug. 28-Sept. 7 and more details will be posted as plans are finalized.

The weather was totally amazing! It was warm and sunny most days by the time Adam and I arrived, with fine conditions on the days we went in and out. The black flies were not nearly as bad as I had thought they would be. The mosquitos were a different story, out in full force a few days before we left. I was pleasantly surprised by the abundance of white blossomed bushes, smelling sweet and looking beautiful. The breeze on the high rocks at the Evelyn liftover provided me with a nearly bug free environment to soak up the sun, enjoy the sparkling waters, hear the water rushing down the mini falls and a great observation point to watch Don catch fish (pickerel) for our final night dinner with the search team.

Michael Neiger has created a great video on YouTube titled 05-23-14 Trask 10-day Expeditionary SAR Operation, Temagami Backcountry, Ontario, Canada that creatively captures their trip and search operation, along with items they found. None of these items were identified as Daniel's after Don and I reviewed the pictures.

On the way out, we stopped at the Chamber of Commerce/Info Centre in Temagami to meet Linda Miller and drop some flyers off. It was a bonus running into Kim Cowan, hearing how he is doing in his new work up there and catching up on what's underway. Time flew quickly and before we knew it, he had to rush off so he wouldn't miss the shuttle boat ride back to Bear Island. Don and I had that long drive back to Waterloo, arriving late, but glad we had taken the time to connect with Linda and Kim.

Special thanks to all those who made this spring search possible: MibSAR team, MNR (Robert, Jim, Kevin), Camp Wanapitei (Woody, Jeff, Erin), Wishin' You Were Fishin' (Rick). cabin owner (Todd), friend (Mike), son Adam, and the OPP.

Don and Ken, a family friend who has been up a number of times already, will be back up to the cabin June 10-17. They will be doing some searching in and around the area, in addition to finding some time to fish.

Update: Today is Daniel's 31st Birthday, now missing for 31 months. This is the 3rd birthday without Daniel, another difficult day.

However, the circle of life carries on. Today Daniel's cousin Jessica, gave birth to Oakley. This is a wonderful joy to our families and special that he shares the same birthday of June 7th with Daniel.

I've lit a sage candle for Daniel and tearfully reflect on all the fond memories, joy, and happiness he has given us.

With all our love, we wish Daniel a very Happy 31st Birthday, wherever he may be.

Update: Yesterday marked 32 months missing, and still no physical signs of Daniel. He's out there somewhere. We have no evidence to indicate foul play. So, we continue to ask for everyone in the area to be on the lookout for signs of Daniel.

Any thoughts or leads are important, even if you feel it is insignificant. It may help to put the pieces together or lead to other possible search options.

I may sound like a broken record here, but what else can we do to find answers, to find Daniel?

Celtic Blessing

“He does not leave, he is not gone,
he looks upon us still.
He walks among the valleys now,
He strides upon the hill.

His smile is in the summer sky,
His grace is in the breeze.
His mem'ries whisper in the grass
his calm is in the trees.

His light is in the winter snow,
his tears are in the rain.
His merriment runs in the brook,
his laughter in the plain.

His gentleness is in the flowers
his sigh in autumn leaves.
He does not leave, he is not gone,
'Tis only we that grieve.”

Summer Search Update: The MibSAR search for Daniel planned for Aug. 29 - Sept. 7 has been postponed. We appreciate the flexibility and ongoing support of all those who come together to make these searches possible. We have learned that flexibility and going with the flow is our way of life, this is OK. Way leads to Way.

On this upcoming long weekend, please remain on the lookout for any signs of Daniel.
Contact the OPP if anything is found or if any tips or leads at 1-888-310-1122 or email tips@missing-u.ca

Update: 34 months missing with nothing found this year, so far. The OPP have had a few tips on their end. Items located, but nothing that can be attributed to Daniel.

The good news is that the search is being rescheduled with MibSAR for Sept. 12-21, 2014. Don and I will be up at the cabin to support the team from the 12-19. We are so grateful to Michael and his team members for their unwavering commitment to find Daniel. They are truly amazing!

Search Update: now 149 weeks missing: The rescheduled search for Sept. 12-21, 2014 has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. The MibSAR team will be looking at another spring search in 2015. We are wishing them all the best in their planned winter training trips this winter and look forward to a "short" winter. Since it's already started out west, hopefully it will come and go quickly. Thanks again to all those who played a role in our search this year:
- Woody and Camp Wanapitei, for parking spots each time and canoe use when needed
- Robert Baker and Kevin Pinkerton, for access approvals to crown lands and parks
- Todd Chunick, for use of his cabin as our home base
- Rick Lockhart, for use of his boat
- Jim Sanderson, for transporting us and our gear
- Graham Mewett, for the detailed maps of the search areas
- to the Ottertooth community for continuing to support us and keep Daniel's story alive.

A kind reminder again to the hunters and trappers in the bush this fall, remember to keep an eye out for signs of Daniel, thanks.

I happen upon the story of Daniel while searching for reference material on a trip I'm working on for next summer.
The story behind Daniel and his disappearance has touched home as I'm not much older then he is, and what you are experiencing is what my own parent's and wife fear each time I do a solo trip into the backcountry. The type of terrain he had covered when he went missing is exactly the type of terrain I hike/bushwhack regularly. I have frequented an area West of there (Sturgeon River to Scarecrow lake) a number of times over the last few years.
I changed my focus for next summer's trip and am looking to retrace the path Daniel may have travelled next summer (2015) with one, maybe two other backcountry backpackers.

Based on the known location of found items, distances and other information, I believe the Google earth mapped route posted previously may be fairly accurate to the possible route travelled, pending a few missing pieces of information.
The one item and probably a big one for me is the yurt described in many areas as being a place he had spent some time in.
Is there cordinates for the location of this yurt?
Was there any other items know to have been removed from this yurt or any other cabin in the area?
I beileve a kitchen knife was identified as being removed from the yurt in one posting I had read online. Other then that, it was assumed he stayed there 6-7 days. Was there any items left behind at the yurt?

The list of items found are lacking and in my opinion (Hopefully not to offend), kind of random and missing a lot of items I would expect to find in a backpacker's pack. Basic items such as the knife removed from the yurt is not mentioned to be in his pack, pants or coat. I would expect a knife to have been such an item he would have left home with, but in any case, the one known to have gone missing isn't included in those items, so it must have continued on.
The sleeping bag is another item of interest to me. The one located was suspected, and later identified as not his. Did he own one? Was there one missing from the yurt?
The pack he carried and was located was pretty small for the length of outting planned. All the exterior clips and straps done up and tensioned (loosened a bit with time and conditions), so there doesn't appear to have been anything attached to the outside of the pack when it was left.

As of right now, I'm focusing on the time line of identified items dropped, suspected physical conditions of Daniel at each point, and weather/environment conditions. This should give me an idea about how far he would have made it passed the last known location.

I have a few other questions I would like to know about Daniel himeself before he left. I'm not sure if asking them on the public forum would be ideal. Would it be possible to contact off the forum and discuss these questions?

I apologize for my previous post. With all the data on the internet on this, trying to assemble a timeline in my head, identify relevant items, and remove items....

After rereading all 4 threads on this site (which appears to have the most relevant data) and the website setup for Daniel (which by the way as some incorrect coordinates for the OPP sites, pictograph and portage or my math is wrong on those items only), I've come up with a few possible scenarios, all of which are full of holes. Ultimately the pack location just doesn't make sense to me (the location and state it was in just doesn't fit any plausible scenario I can come up with).

From the information I've read, using different ideas posted (Pine_Sap here has some good knowledge and experience of the area and this type of travel from what I can tell), and my own experiences, the following is what I would consider the most plausible (Please punch holes in this theory or toss in ideas or data where possible);

Leading up to the arriving to the area is unknown really.

Day 1. (November 3rd)
After arriving in the area Daniel purchased food (vegetables and cooking oil only?) and inquired about a backcountry map of the area. The Back Roads map book was available at most gas stations at this time (at least in Sudbury).
From purchasing the (limited?) food and maybe map (no reference was made to one being purchase, only enquiring about it), I would assume Daniel went to visit the care taker at the Camp Wanapitei and found he wasn't there (possible gate blocking camp grounds?).
From the camp, I am guessing Daniel moved west, possibly through the bush or trail to where the yurt is located (assuming it is the camping are marked on the version 4 of the Garmin topo maps) for shelter.

Day 2 -7 or 8 (November 4th to 10th or 11th)
According to the write ups I've read, it is assumed Daniel stayed at the Yurt for 6-7 days. This is assumed based on wood consumed and other evidence I guess. I have no actual information as to the location of this yurt, but assume it's between Camp Wanapitei and Bamac Lake. It may be East of what is identified as Eagle River on my topo map (Garmin V4 topo).
I personally can't explain the this length of time. Myself, I would have hit the ground running, although I would have also planned out the route far in advance and not have been looking for a map at a local retailer. This could have been the point where Daniel was getting accustom to the isolation, getting settled in and or possibly reviewing options for his final destination. I am under the believe this time (6-7 days) estimated is far longer than actual.

Day 7 or 8 (November 10th or 11th)
Daniel Packs up his travel gear (complete inventory iffy) and heads back to the road into Camp Wanapitei. Once on the road, heads north, probably stopping at his car one more time, then proceeds West on Red Squirrel Road. At approximately 8.3km from the car, Daniel would take a road/trail south west for ~1.5km, then right (west) onto another road/trail for approximately 1.4km, finally turning left on the last piece of road for 800-900M before heading into the bush for the last 100-150M (pack location). This is a total of 13.6km from where I estimate the yurt to be.
Now why the pack drop?
~13.6-15km, average road speed 4kmph, bushwhacking 1-2kmph, there should have been plenty of day light left unless it had been a late start. Assuming a late start, maybe some wondering and exploring, Daniel may have put his pack down in search of food and or water. The lake is approximately 200M as per my Garmin topo from where the pack was dropped. (Please note, I have seen up to a 100M difference between Garmin's Topo Version 4 map and Google Earth's map.) With the pack being black, it could have been easily missed and or lost.
My estimated travel time at this point (assuming there was not a large amount lost wondering) is ~3.85 to 4 hours from the point he left the yurt. Tack on possibly an hour searching for the misplaced pack, 5 hours. I am basing the lost pack theory on a number of accounts of people leaving there pack to go for water or exploring and misplacing it. Most cases this is during the sunset or dusk.
So recap of possible scenario on day November 10th or 11th; left yurt later morning, stopped at car one last time, followed roads closest to shore line while avoiding the known swamps and rivers that would cause major obstacles, left pack in search of food and or water and lost it. It's now getting late. Does he continue forging on (not logical) or settle in for the night (no evidence).
--> Keep in mind, the lost pack and or deliberate drop of pack takes the discovered sleeping bag found near the portage (North west) out of the equation. There is no way Daniel would have carried the sleeping back in his arms and ditch the pack.

Day 8 or 9 (November 11th or 12th)
Assuming Daniel has spent the night with nothing more than the snow pants and coat near his misplaced pack, he set off cold, probably weak/hungry North west along the shoreline, following animal trails and other tracks.
--> Should note, the MiBSAR page for Daniel indicates shoes and boots where missing. Neither where in the pack, so one pair was on foot, and the other pair left somewhere (home, yurt, near pack).
By shoreline, it is approximately 7.5km from the pack location to the jacket (and another ~50M to the snow pants). Without a preplanned route via GPS or mappings, by shore line would have been the option most likely taken.
~7.5 to 8km at 1-2kmph, cold, and likely weak from lack of calorie intake (estimated non-weight lost hikers diet is 2000-3500 calories. Add cooler weather, 3500 to 4500 calories), this stretch wouldn't have been easy. Daniel probably wasn't as adjile as he normally would have been. There is what appears to be water ~100M south of the Jacket location (or any other water along the shoreline).
At this point, one of two things may have happen;
My first thought would be he fell in the swamp or lake while trying to rock hope the shore line or cross some wet areas and opted to remove the wet clothing.
The second possibility (Can't speak first hand of this), is at this point, Daniel past the point of shivering and with the mind and body shutting down, hit the point where the mind figured the body was hot. It must be noted, at this point, Daniel would be delusional, slurred speech and shutting down.

-->Pure Speculation Now
Looking at the maps, the MibSAR did the logical thing and assumed searching North East of the pants and coat locations. The clothing was discarded directly west of water so Daniel had to either continue North the closes and most likely crossing point (the portage).
-->Possible alternative;
In most cases when exploring dense bush, I make every effort to have an exit strategy (in case something goes seriously wrong). There is an identified road/trail approximately 4.25km (as the crow flies) directly East of the clothing drop locations. Not knowing Daniel personally or his thought process or mental state at that time, or if he even know of the road/trail or would have considered it... Daniel may have decided to straight line bushwhack for the road/trail. (I will personally admit, this is 75% of the time harder then back tracking.)
In Daniel's case, he would have had to remember to backtrack south below two bodies of water, then progressively head north east avoiding a large swampy area and locate (without gps accuracy) the road (~5.2km straight line routing).
Without further search data, I would personally believe in this scenario that Daniel went East. Away from the shore line as a guide, I can't speculate if he went directly East, North East or South East. Without navigation equipment (we do not know if he had any or not) and his physical abilities, it is hard to say how far Daniel traveled.

In a nutshell, This is my best guess at the timeline and events that took place. I would hope that there is data available (publicly or not) that would prove or disprove any of the ideas or points/thoughts I have covered.

Access to or even a photo of the searched areas (grids) would help refine or disprove this scenario.
I am working on other possible scenarios, but this so far is the best I have with the available information.

Update: Daniel is now missing for 35 months, with no further signs or new information this year, yet. We thought this would be the year Daniel is found and still hope and pray for this to be.

northern-mike: Thank you for your considerate thoughts and possibilites. We constantly go through different scenarios, trying to figure out what Daniel's destination was, was he heading north or back to the yurt, and how far could he have gone with hypothermia.

According to the owner of the yurt, when returning in spring 2012 he noticed 3-4 days worth of wood gone, and found a bottle of cooking oil, 2/3 empty in the yurt that was not the kind he used. He also confirmed a knife of his was missing and that nothing else was unusual. He suspected Daniel had been there and so do we.

When my husband checked the yurt while up to search after Daniel's care was found in Nov. 2011, there were no evident signs that Daniel had been at the yurt or in the area, except for the Stonehenge formation found on the beach. So, he left a note and some clothing for Daniel in case he came back to the yurt. We suspected Daniel would have gone there knowing it was vacant. We believe Daniel made the Stonehenge creation and spent some time there. However, everything left for Daniel was still in the yurt in spring 2012. Out of respect for the yurt owner's privacy, we are not publishing the coordinates of his place.

Knowing Daniel, if it was a nice day, he may have just wanted to go for a day trip, or perhaps head north, depending on his intent, understanding he did not have a sleeping bag. The one found by the OPP was too aged and the personal items in it were not Daniel's.

If you could share your calculation of the GPS coordinates that don't match ours, I can check it out. Best to email me at find.dan@rogers.comand we can discuss further.

After various OPP searches, they believe Daniel was likely heading east of where his winter clothing was found, but also probably disoriented without his winter clothes, hypothermia would be very likely.

In Daniel's prior solo time up there in 2011, he often traveled at night, however, never in the fall and never during hunting season. If Daniel couldn't get a map, (all his maps were left at home, along with the other items he had set aside for a winter trip he was planning. For footwear, we know his snowboarding boots are missing from home, but not sure they were with him and what else he may have taken, perhaps his black runners since they are also missing. He should have his wallet and car keys too, since they were not in the back pack found.

There are so many scenarios. We focused on north of his clothing to the cave area on the north west side of Evelyn that he talked about, but after the MibSAR search team found this area, it would be too far for Daniel to have traveled without provisions. The MibSAR search team will be focusing on searching the eastern shoreline next spring, to ensure both sides have been searched.

Where his back pack was found, is a very popular area for moose hunting. We would ask all hunters in this area to be on the lookout for any further signs of Daniel. All we can do until next spring is hope and pray that someone comes upon more evidence or information.

Reason for Everything - Requesting Your Suppport:
I now know the reason our planned search was cancelled. It allowed me time to focus on making a difference for others. Families with missing loved ones need to clear a roadblock (and nothing to do with Red Squirrel Road gate). Police need to be able to have access to information and enter locations to investigate, even when there is no evidence of a crime. Currently Police have no authority to do so which is not helping to find our missing loved ones. A recent article in the local paper explains this dilemma Police focus on missing as parents push for change.

For those who want to learn about the petition "Ontario Needs Missing Persons legislation" simply read the News article on Catherine Fife's, MPP Kitchener-Waterloo site which has a link to the petition on the bottom of her article. Missing Persons in Ontario. Please show your support by signing the petition, get others to sign too, and mail it as instructed before the week of October 20th, when it is planned to be introduced to the legislature in Toronto. The more signatures, the louder our voice, thanks.

Update 3 Years Missing: It's hard to believe another year has unfolded and Daniel is still missing. Our family is learning to live with this uncertainty, life carries on, grateful for every day. Today it is a beautiful fall day, sun shining, leaves falling and colour everywhere. I hope it is as wondrous up in the Temagami backcountry too. Our new norm is starting to settle, but days like this are harder, now 36 months.

Both Don and I thought 2014 would be the year Daniel would be found. We still hold onto this, after all there's still 58 days left in 2014, plus today right! So be aware, be on the lookout, help us out since we won't be in the backcountry again until spring 2015, if searching for him is needed.

In tribute to Daniel on this milestone date, with gratitude, I'm sharing a song "Into the Wild" by Dustin Schade (Daniel's cousin) and a friend Chris Coghlan. A gift such as this helps soothe the pain and touches the heart. It's a song expressing love of family while trying to bring meaning to our uncertainty.

Dustin sings for all of us: "I want you back just one more time, you're always on my mind". Daniel's Song - Into the Wild

Update: 37 months since Daniel went missing; we are in wait mode once again until ice out or if new information comes forward. We have learned lots about patience and perseverance on this journey of uncertainty. Like other families with missing loved ones, we hold onto a glimmer of hope that we will find our missing, find our Daniel.

Update: 38 months since Daniel went missing and now we are into another new year. Officially, Freeze-up on Dec. 29th , but with the upcoming rain and above 0C temps, maybe things will change up there too. We did get some snow today, but likely will disappear tomorrow...just like you know who.

A new year brings new beginnings. We want to wish "all the best" in this new year to the folks on this forum and those who continue to support us in so many ways.

Hoping 2015 brings you health, happiness and goodness.

Update: 39 months since Daniel went missing and still no news, no leads, no physical evidence.

In these cold winter months, I wonder if there is something more we should be doing to find him. Any thoughts?

I have some thoughts and have been stewing about them for a long time but I don't want to come across like some armchair detective or nutbar. I've just been hoping hunting season would have turned up something more and praying you get answers.

Update: March 3rd marks 40 months since Daniel disappeared. We still have no answers, no physical evidence, no certainty of where Daniel is or what happened to him.

This update is late, since Don and I were on a much needed two week vacation. Daniel never leaves our thoughts. The recent full moon reminded us of Daniel and we reflected on the many full moons that have passed since he went missing. We wondered how many full moons helped him on his journey. They too, act as markers along our journey of uncertainty.

We remain hopeful that someone, somewhere, knows something and will share information to help solve Daniel's case. Spring will be here soon, leading us into another season of searching thanks to the MibSAR team. As stated before, we are very fortunate to have had some items found and to have an area to search. So many families don't have any leads to know where to search for their missing loved one.

Update: This Good Friday marks 41 months since Daniel disappeared. This day is a day to be thankful, count our blessings. So, it's fitting to say "Thanks" again to our friends on Ottertooth who continue to support us on our journey to find Daniel.

Wishing all of you a blessed Easter and sunny Spring!

Spring brings renewed hope and opportunity to search for Daniel. We hope for an early ice-out.
The MibSAR team are gearing up for their upcoming search for Daniel, May 22-31, 2015.
Thanks to Michael Neiger for the countdown!

Update: 42 months since Daniel disappeared with yet another full moon tonight. This long winter has brought no new leads or tips on Daniel’s case.

The spring has finally arrived and we are going with Heff’s prediction of May 8th for ice-out. Don and Adam are planning on an initial early search May 8-11, focusing on a specific area that Don spotted last year, but there was no opportunity to check out further last fall. The MibSAR team of four members are preparing for a spring search from May 22-31st.

As a reminder to the canoeists, campers, cottagers, lodgers and persons travelling in this area, please continue to be on the lookout for signs of Daniel. Daniel’s flyer remains the same as last year, since nothing further was found in 2014. I’m hoping this is the last flyer needed.

Initial early search May 8-11, 2015: Nothing was found; the area had a lot of blow over and everything looks the same. We reviewed the map of the area covered by the OPP, this particular spot was not covered by them, so it needs more attention. With many "Thanks" to Camp Wanapitei, Todd C., Jim S., Michael P., and of course Don and Adam.

Next Search: The MibSAR team are on the countdown for their operational search May 22-31st. They will be focusing on an extensive search of the the east shore of the southern reaches of Lady Evelyn.

We have also arranged for 2 certified cadaver dogs (Breeze and Quinn) with their handlers (Kim Cooper and Pauline Sunman) from the Ottawa Valley SAR Dog Association, to be up there for 3 days May 22-24th, offering a more efficient method to search the area that the guys were unsuccessful in finding/completing last week. Time permitting, the handlers will run the dogs where Daniel's back pack was found and the Foster Creek area.

Don and I plan to arrive May 21st and return June 1st to support both teams, using the cabin again as home base, thanks to the owner Todd. We are fortunate and grateful to have so many supportive folks and professionals on Daniel's case.

Wishing you all an enjoyable May long weekend. Be safe out there.
