It is hard for me to remember if the portage sign was there or not. I belive it wasent but also that day a terrible lightning storm was on top of us! I had campers in lightning drill then set out to look for the guide who took a wrong turn in the beginning of the portage. After finding the guide who looked like he just saw a goast ,thinking in my head he just found one of the people who went over the falls! He was taking cover under his boat because lightning struck right next to him we rallyed the troops and got of there. I had to stop a few times while paddling up that river because of the storm, one time getting everyone out of the boats and bushing spots so we could get into lightning drill again. Finally reaching wawiagama lake that evening and hearing the story of what happened to the section right before us I can just say it was a bad day for canoe tripping! I dont use a GPS but it sounds like a great idea to publish the locations for those who do! Thanks ED

Boat, the two men went over the falls the day before you were on the river.

after years of travelling all over the North,I returned to the Temagami Region for the 2007 Wabun Reunion. We went from Spainsh water into and down the Wanaeptai- up to and down the Sturgeon- then up the Obabika and back to Garden Island. The water was high.

I conclude that there were very few safe runable rapids in the enitre area. Everything is very small with small openings and when filled with water- the runs do not spread out. When you are running little ghuts and canyons- or narrow narrow openings between boulders- there is very little room for error.

Be careful

Well Jon Berger....co-author of the Canoe Atlas of the Little North. Good to hear from you.
I used your book this past Summer to pilot my way down the Berens River from Berens Lake to Family Lake. The information in the Atlas was very accurate and useable. Even the portage into Douglas Lake and then Family Lake which allows one to by-pass Fishing Lake and Little Grand Rapids was still useable. Without your Atlas one would never have known that by-pass was available.
This next year I will be consulting the Atlas to find my way up the Opichuan River ex Abazobitichuan Lake.
Ed.
